Young Adults on Celebrity

My family and I are first time cruisers. We are looking to go to the Caribbean in December. My sons will be turning 20 and 18 and I am wondering if there is enough day time activities for them on board? The website seems vague(limited); I called Celebrity and the woman who answered told me they could go to the club LOL

Any input on this would be appreciated.

I have taken my children on Celebrity and Azamara, when they were young adults.

I think the kind of "fun" they will have, would depend on the type of people they are. Celebrity is a more quiet, relaxed line. That's exactly why my kids like it. No surfriders, rock climbing walls, etc..

They are generally not social butterflies who want to "hang out" with others. They read, go to bed pretty early, don't really drink (glass of wine or beer with dinner) and that's about it. They fit in with the older clientele on the X ships quite well!

Just my 2 cents...

My brother just turned 21 on our first cruise (see my review in my signature if you want) and my fiance and I had just turned 26 before the cruise.

My brother honestly enjoyed the quietness of the cruise. In his everyday life he is consumed with facebook, iPhones, computer games, etc. Before the cruise he was giving a fit over not having internet then by the 2nd day he was so relaxed!

We brought our family favorite game (backgammon) and enjoyed playing that. He also enjoyed the activities that were offered on the cruise, such as trivia.

I think they might surprise you. It is nice for their brain to shut down and get away from technology for a little while!

If you want, I can ask him some specific questions?

As 26 year olds, we enjoyed the hot glass show (if your ship has it) and listening to all the different types of music on board.

I think they will enjoy it! We did, and booked our honeymoon on X! However, we are older, 27 now. (Are you on our sailing? 12/9?)

My brother did say for family cruises he would prefer Celebrity. But if going with his friends more of a party cruise like Carnival.

Hope this helped a bit? Let me know if there are any other questions I can ask him.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

While I love Celebrity, at that age sister cruise line Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is in my opinion a much better choice. Far more activities and venues geared towards people your sons' ages and far more similarly aged people on the ship for them to socialize with. I would look at one of the larger RCI ships (as there is the most wow factor and most activities) - these would include Allure, Oasis, Liberty, Freedom, Independence or their new build, Qauntum.

Mine are pretty active in their daily lives but do not like too much over the top. They have each other and pretty much would keep to themselves; I don't see them "mixing". Thanks for sharing your 2 cents!

thanks for sharing your experience! And, congrats on your upcoming wedding :)

My thoughts are similar: it is a family vacation. If they want to whoop it up, they can do a party cruise with their friends.:D

Gonzo, thanks for the welcome!

You're killing me;) I am trying to decide between Allure and Celebrity(either Reflection or Silhouette). The only reason I have not booked Allure is I am concerned about the smoking policy; for us personally, Celebrity's is better for our health and allergies.

I don't know what itinerary you are looking at, but mine loved Europe (if you can swing it!).

Like another poster, we play games onboard as well. And trivia is about as exciting as they get.

I think doing the kind of research ahead of time is really smart. My family would not be happy on one of the big, high-acitvity ships at all, so finding as good a "match" as possible is really smart.

Just research your ports for fun and interesting stuff you can do, not just the ships tours, that way, when you are on board, they will be happy to just "hang" out or "chill" lol! We always look at our options, and have taken cycling tours, river rafting tours, climbing volcano, etc, check out my blog/video (below in my signature) and see if its for you, i am sure they will love the whole adventure of it! There is also a sports deck, and the hideaway/i-lounge if thats what they would like...

Understandable, the smoking policy on Celebrity is MUCH more non-smoker friendly than on sister line RCI. Allure definitely will have a ton more to do for your sons, but if you are used to being in smoke free environments, are sensitive to the smell and dislike the smell than it may be best to steer clear of RCI until they modernize their smoking policy. I recently sailed on Allure (after five straight Celebrity cruises) and while I loved all the action and activities on Allure, the smoking policy was a huge downer for me.

Welcome, Allure is your choice if you have younger adults that will enjoy activities. I don't smoke and there are many places you will not notice the smoke.i mostly notice it at the casino and one other place. I been fortunate enough not to have smokers next to my balcony rooms. If you want a quiet relaxing cruise Celebrity is your choice. If you want the best shows also, Allure is so much better. As with the smoke again there are limited places to smoke in public places on both ships. allure is not one big smoky ship.

REFLECTION

No inside smoking

No smoking on verandahs

Outside smoking:

Deck 5 port side

Deck 14, poolside, aft area, port side

Deck 15, Sunset Bar, aft, port side

Cigars and pipes allowed on Deck 15, not Deck 5 and 14

The Deck 5 area may be changed to starboard side if needed during bunkering

SMOKING - Allure is a primarily a non-smoking ship however we have designated areas onboard for our guests who do smoke. Smoking is only allowed on the port side of the outer Decks 15 & 16, at the after deck bar on Deck 17 Forward, The upper level of Dazzles on Deck 9, a designated section in the Boleros Bar on Deck 5, on the Starboard side and the bar area in Casino Royale on Deck 4 and in a designated area of Blaze on Deck 4 and in a designated area of the Bow & Stern Pub on Deck 5.

You can avoid smoke from others on balconies by booking a Boardwalk or Park Avenue balcony where smoking is not allowed if that's important to you.

Our older granddaughter was 19 on her last Celebrity cruise ... and Celebrity remains her favorite cruise line. :)

We are doing a Caribbean.

I wish my personality allowed me to just decide and move on but it doesn't ;) I will probably spend more time reading and researching than we will be on the ship!

My husband insists on ocean balcony(fine by me! LOL).

Thank you for letting me know about your granddaughter. The ages of 18-21 are a funny time~not adults but really no longer "teens", not sure where they fit in certain circumstances.

Thanks for the welcome BosJoe!

My 1st(and biggest) concern is the balcony. I called RCI to confirm their printed policy. They really were not able to offer me any "guaranteed" solutions if the cabin we select is exposed.

louise, thank you! Now if the CSR @ Celebrity would have told me that there was a sports deck(I knew of the ilounge) I wouldn't have been so concerned when she told me to send them to the club LOL

I will take a peek at your blog.

If you opt for Allure, a compromise regarding the balcony might be to book one of the far aft (rear) Boardwalk Balcony staterooms; no smoking but still decent views of the ocean (and great people watching from the balcony as well as nice views of the Aqua shows). Here are some shots from my aft boardwalk balcony on Allure (stateroom #12329) - these rooms do tend to book far in advance though:

We were on the constellation for 12 days July 7-19. My oldest son is 20 and had an amazing time and met & hung out with a large group of young adults. Celebrity is apparently rolling out a Generation neXt program for young adults 18-25. They have sports activities and evening activities. He had a blast. I am away tonight for business but will try to post some of his pictures in next day or 2

Just coming by to thank everyone who took the time to answer my Q. We've decided to book Celebrity! Trying to choose between Reflection and Silhouette. I will take the time today to research itineraries and then go from there.

@Sharon, if you have time, I would love to see your pics. Thanks.

A few years ago our two eldest were 18 (almost 19) and 20 at that time. We let them pick the cruise line. They chose Norwegian and since we had never sailed on that line we said OK. It wasn't until later we found out why they chose NCL. It turns out NCL will let 18 - 21 year olds buy beer and wine if the parents sign a form. They aren't big partyers either but they wanted the option of having a beer by the pool and wine at dinner (the legal age here is 19).

We were on Celebrity this spring with our 17 year old and he loved it. He likes to read so he found the quiet atmosphere on-board to be to has liking. We just saved the activities for the ports, ziplining, bobsledding and swimming with the stingrays. Whatever you choose, I'm sure they will enjoy it - hey it's on your dime!:D
