Based on my research of the bio bays, swimming is not permitted, in order to preserve them. We are going to see one of the bio bays before our Valor cruise in October. We have 3 days planned before the cruise in San Juan, but kind of wishing we had booked the 3 days for after the cruise, since it will be so port intensive I think we'll be exhausted by the time our vacation is over! Do you have an option to switch yours to after the cruise, where the moon phase would be better?
We are West Coasties, so we really need to get to PR and rest a day or two before such a Port intensive cruise.
Looking at the Bio calender for other months to get the gist of when is best
Either side of our Cruise is not great for viewing.
The week before the Full moon it looks like they don't tour at all.
Our cruise starts on the Full Moon. Nice for the cruise :D
It would be better to go after the cruise, But not all that great.
We do have one night after the cruise, but will be getting up early to head home.
It is a LONG day getting from SJPR to the West Coast, so a good nights sleep is important.
If San Juan is all I hope and hear about, I guess I will just have to make a mental note to return,
Maybe I will return for a land Vacation making sure it is with the new moon ;)

Went to CVS and bought some water, Cokes, and juices for mixers.

How far from the pier is the CVS? Did you just carry back onto the ship in their plastic bags?
Thank you for your review
Very helpful, we plan on doing this very cruise in 2014.
Loved all the Photos, can't wait to live it myself
We are spending a couple days before hand in PR
Sadly it looks as though those days will be full or almost full moon
so I guess I wont be spending the evening in the glowing waters.
Just wondering, did you get to swim in them or just boat thru?
Again, very well thought and put together review.

I am thinking of doing your Barbados sailing/snorkeling tour
can you tell me how much it was per person?
Also looking at the Silver Moon. they have one that can take 24.
We may be that big of a party.
Thanks
Thanks Island Hopper58!
Glad you are enjoying the review. :)

Regarding swimming in the biobay...
There is a strong conservation effort to preserve the ecosystem in the bay,
therefore swimming is not permitted.

Regarding Barbados...
I have sailed with both Silvermoon and Calabaza in the past.
Both have beautiful boats, great food, and great crews.
If you have more than 12 people in your party, you will have a great day with Silver Moon.
However, if you have 12 or less, I would go with Calabaza hands down!
Reserve early. :)

I believe the cost was $100 or $110.

The CVS is located just down the street from the pier.
Not a bad walk at all.
Yes, we did just carry the items back on board in the plastic bags. :)

The property sits on a small, rocky beach that is home to thousands of sea urchins.
Therefore, swimming was not an option.

However, it was so nice to walk along the beach, looking for shells and sea glass, while enjoying the beautiful skies, especially during sunrise and sunset.

We even made a friend on the first day.

After we picked up a few supplies at the market, we headed out to explore the island.

We drove from Isabel II to Esperanza and walked down the sea wall.
We stopped at Duffy's for a quick lunch and a little refreshment.

We had decided on Secret Beach, or Pata Prieta, for the morning.
A little adventurous drive, but it was well worth it!

We snorkeled for a bit, but visibility wasn't very good.
So we opted instead to go for a little hike.

After having the beach all to ourselves for most of the morning, a few more people arrived...
and we made another beach friend!

The bartender at Bananas had suggested Punta Arenas, or Green Beach, for snorkeling, so we loaded up and headed in that direction.

Now is a good time to discuss the roads and traffic.
Remember the drive from the airport?
The ferry landing was a few blocks from our hotel and we had to pass by it almost every time we left the property.
Traffic was pretty intense when the ferry arrived, but after a few trips we became used to it.
Other than that, driving on the island was not difficult.
The maximum speed limit is 35mph, but lower in many areas.
No traffic lights.
Most paved roads were in good condition, but many were on the narrow side.
Roads to the remote beaches were unpaved, full of holes, and a little challenging at times.
A jeep was definitely a plus and I'm pretty sure we added a few scratches to the top! (There were plenty there before we started)

We went to a place called Conuco.
It was a nice, open-air restaurant with good food and great drinks.
However, the staff were definitely on "island time" and we spent more on that one meal than we had on the previous three nights at Al's.

The sunrise each morning was spectacular, and the best place to catch it was on a beach about 5 minutes down the road.
We had also became infatuated with collecting sea glass, so this morning was spent like all the others.

For our last full day on the island, we wanted something a little different.
With some input from Carl, we loaded up the jeep with beach gear and hit the road.

One little detour by the Mercado for some supplies.
At Al's we had discovered Coqui Fire hot sauce.
It is produced locally, with Caribbean spices, and labeled 1-15, depending on the "sweet factor."
We bought our four favorites, but were delighted to find it is available online too!

The destination for the day was Playa Navio for some boogie boarding.
It is located inside the Sun Beach gates and the admission is $2 per car.
The road was quiet an adventure in itself.
The speed limit sign says 10mhp, but I'm sure we never went that fast! Lol!

But it was definitely worth the challenge!
It was completely deserted when we arrived, but a few more people arrived during the day.

We set up in a nice shady area, then went to explore the beach.

Doesn't look to be a decent boogey-board location. Any lack of success was not your fault.

You would have had much better luck and longer rides per wave
at Rockley Beach, South Coast Barbados
where the shelf in to the beach is more of a gradual slope.

LOL, Aplmac!

Remember, I have already penciled in a week in Barbados for our next trip! :):):)

I guess I'll add the South Coast to the itinerary! :D:cool:
