We are thinking about booking a partial obstructed guaranteed cabin. I have a few questions. Is this category always available because I don't see it online. Also, how do I tell which cabins are in the partial obstructed category? I need to make sure we won't end up in a far forward cabin. If there is a chance of that, we probably won't be able to try it.

Look at a deck plan and see where the cabin is located. You can tell if it's partially obstructed or totally obstructed. This will help too:

Going on Coral Princess Aug 28. Booked obstructed ocean view. Aug 16 was assigned E506 which was an obstructed ocean view. Great location and was a larger cabin. Very happy.

Last night Aug 26 printed boarding tags. Today Aug 27 get email from Princess. We have now been upgraded again to a BD balcony!!!! Guess I won't go to the casino because I already won........

It is this kind of thing that keeps me booking guarantees. I hope there is enough ink left in the printer for the new tags. :)

We booked a partially obstructed view cabin for our 28 day RT LA-Tahiti cruise in 2011. 4 weeks before sailing we were upgraded to an Aloha balcony....and so were my sister and her hubby.

If we never got another upgrade, that was the perfect cruise for it to happen. It's the only upgrade we have gotten in 11 Princess cruises.

Cheers, Denise

I believe,if you look at the ocean view cabins ,when you click on the cabin of your choice it will show if it is obstructed or not.

Sandigojoe, love the Snoopy picture--I'm a Peanuts fan too! :)

Interested to know if you were upgraded on this cruise. We're scheduled for 8/16/14 on the CB and hoping for an upgrade, but doubtful given the late summer sailing to the caribbean.

What's been the latest time you've been upgraded? I'm a bit over 4 weeks out until I take my Alaska cruise.

At the pier.

Lately we have been assigned our cabin between 1 and 2 weeks prior to cruise.

Upgraded from Obstructed OV to Balcony on Pacific Princess just over one month ago after receiving exactly what we had paid for the two previous cruises (B2B2B).

As the Royal/Regal have no window cabins, has anyone received an upgrade from a high category, inside cabin to a balcony?

Since you asked...on the Royal's inaugural TA we were upgraded from the cheapest inside to a nice balcony. But that was our honeymoon, so maybe thqrt helped. Or maybe not.

We found out about it after we'd already boarded and couldn't figure out why our names weren't on our pre-assigned cabin.

Since this thread was resurrected from the dead, let's review What We Know. Nobody can figure out why some people get upgrades. There's really no way to out-think the Upgrade Fairy. And the "common knowledge" that guarantees are more likely to get upgrades is not, AFAIK, backed up by anything more than anecdotal evidence. Our real upgrades, for instance, were from assigned cabins, not guarantees.

There is no category for only partially obstruction -- categories are either obstructed (second letter of the category is U through Z) or non-obstructed (second letter is A through F or 1 through 6). If you're booking a guarantee you have to book it as obstructed and take a chance of how "partially" it will be.

If you want to avoid far forward, don't book _Z (forward) or _Y (forward OR aft).

Booked my first guarantee. A window suite.

Never have had one and only looked in once. They are such good deals for getting the perks and two cruise credits. I almost think they should be reclassified as a "special" minisuite. Doesn't seem fair to suite passengers paying twice their price.

We have always booked suites. Being elite you don't get much more than a larger space and breakfast. We are late sleepers so on a port intense cruises, we don't go. We are to the point that they are not worth the money anymore. Had a mini last month and were very happy with it. We also found we get out of the cabin more. In suites, we tended to just stay on our own balcony and eat there most of the time.

Here is my question:

Has anyone been giving a suite with a balcony with their WS guarantee? I looked and the WS's are sold out with a few other ones available but most of the Rivera suites are not sold - not our favorite location with the noise above and narrow balcony. Had one once and said never again. I know cabins will open up when final payment comes along but just wondering what others have experienced. And guarantees are not considered an upgrade so it is a completely different ball game.

For the great price, I truly will be satisfied with the WS but I think my wife is hoping for something with a balcony - have always had one. I have a feeling we will get assigned 301 - the smallest one.

So, what are your experiences with WS guarantees??? thanks

It's pretty rare for someone to get a full suite as any kind of complimentary upgrade -- if they need to fill suites, they'll almost always offer it as an upsell to people in minisuites first. As upsells generally go by meta, they're not likely to offer it as an upsell to a lower suite category, either. If they're upgrading people because they need to fill suites, moving from one suite category to the other just means they now have to upgrade someone else.

I'm not saying it's not possible -- anything is possible! -- but I wouldn't hold your breath.

And guarantees are not considered an upgrade so it is a completely different ball game.

I'm not sure what this means? Any time you get a higher category than the one you booked, it's considered an upgrade (by Princess, at least!), regardless if you have an assigned cabin or a guarantee.

We cruised for the first time to Alaska in 2010, first time cruise, we booked 9 months in advance and started with a balcony, the prices dropped and we went to a mini suite. We were on the Island, and had a land tour also. We did this through a travel agent. The week of our sailing we got a phone call from our travel agent that we had been upgraded to a full suite, and it was nice. She told us cruising would never be the same again for us. We are going again to Alaska in September on the Grand, in just a balcony, but we love the location of our cabin. I know that will never happen again, but it was very nice.
