Baggage Handling in Venice

My two travelling companions have health issues. I'm concerned about handling 3 large bags and several smaller ones on water taxi/water busses.

I am in need of some practical advice on getting from the Marco Polo Airport to the monastery Centro Culturale Don Orione Artigianelli of Venice.

is this a 1-2 nite stay before a cruise? If so, the budget option is to leave your large suitcases at the Left Luggage facility at Piazzale Roma and only take overnight bags to the hotel. Take the ATVO airport express bus to PRoma (6E, 20 minutes) then walk across the square to the left luggage. Then walk about 3 blocks to the Grand Canal and catch a water bus to the Zattere.

Or, if you need all the luggage with you, get a luggage cart at the airport, walk 5 minutes to the dock and catch the Alilaguna to the Zattere stop, and walk a few blocks to your hotel.

Another option would be a private water taxi. They leave from the same dock by the airport. About 110E.

This map shows the location of the Zattere stop and the Hotel Belle Arti which is next to your destination:

Info about transportation options from the airport in that same web site:

Perhaps you could choose a hotel near the Piazzale Roma to make life even easier.... Best Western Olimpia, Ca Doge, Santa Chiara, Arlecchino.

Will you be able to manage taking the People Mover to the pier? If not you can catch a cab from Piazzale Roma to the ship.

This map shows the location of the bus drop off, the Left Luggage facility is, and the vaporetto stop: http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/hotelmaps/marittima.htm

- the ATVO bus drops you off in Piazzale Roma (at the airplane symbol)

- the the Left Luggage facility is next to the People Mover symbol and the CaDoge Hotel

- the vaporetto is the left of the Calatrava Bridge. You don't need to cross the bridge.

Trasbagagli, the company that runs the left luggage offices at the airport and at Piazzale Roma, offers a luggage transport service for groups. I don't know if this service is available for individuals, but you can certainly e-mail them and ask. If they do, you might be able to leave your large bags with them at the airport and pick them up either at Piazzale Roma or have them delivered to the cruise port.

It costs nothing to ask the question, but the answer might be expensive!

We did a water taxi to our hotel near st marks. Our taxi could get us about 1 block from our hotel. He did help us unload our luggage to the dock. Basically he lifted it from the boat and we set it on the dock. All luggage was wheeled to the hotel.

My wife and now I both have health issues. We plan to have one large suitcase and one carryon each. My wife uses a walker. We arrive by train (10AM) the morning of our cruise from Rome. Is there anyone to help us get our luggage from the train station to the cruise port. I realize that a water taxi is an option but does anyone recommend one or two that would help us with our luggage.

Thank you in advance for your response.

It would be much less expensive to get off the train at Mestre and take a land taxi to the cruise port, although a lot less fun.

There is a luggage porter service you can reserve from Trenitalia for only 5 Euro. It's available at Rome Termini and possibly at Venice Santa Lucia. I say "possibly" because Santa Lucia is included in the Italian version of the web site but when I went to get the English language link for you I noticed that Venice isn't listed.

At any rate, it's pretty inexpensive and may save you some effort getting on and off the train.

Here's pix of Piazzale Roma (PR on most signs in Venice) where the bus from the Marco Polo Airport drops you. I've outlined the Left Luggage Office. Essentially, if you walk away from where the bus parks, you'll walk right in the door. The Blue Bus is run by the ATVO folks. Desk is easy to find in the Airport. I whipped out a little try at Autobus and Piazzale Roma. The girl behind the desk smiled and said,"you betcha, buddy."

There is no porter service at the train station, and steps with a turn to get on the train. My husband and I had a roll on and tote each and I'm glad we didn't have more. There were a lot of people struggling with bags. I would probably look at taking a car service, given your scenario I'm not sure the train will work for you for any number of reasons.
