What to do with luggage while in NYC

Our flight arrives mid-day at LGA, one day before our cruise. We are staying in Long Island City. Our hotel will hold our luggage until 6:00 PM, but we'd like to sightsee a bit longer than that, without having to return to the hotel at 6:00, then going back out to NYC. That would be a lot of subway, or taxi, travel. Any suggestions?
