Luggage Direct Service

Has anyone used the Luggage Direct Service where they take your luggage the night before leaving the ship and you don't see it until you arrive at your final airport destination? How did you like it? What is the cost? I'm just afraid of not getting my luggage as we are not going home but to another segment of our trip.

  • 3 weeks later...

We have used LD whenever it was offered and found it wonderful. Unfortunately our latest cruise, a 30 day RT San Diego did not offer it and we decided to use Luggage Forward which was much more expensive as they picked it up from our home several days before sailing but was quite efficient in the service advertised. However as we were in the Neptune Suites ourconcierge was able for a much more reasonable charge to have our luggage picked up ourside our door the night before and transported to the San Diego airport. It was somewhat of a help by not having to deal with porters etc. but nothing nearly a nice as the luggageDirect.

I forgot to say this concierge service included a special bus to take us and our luggage to the San Dieg0 air terminal. It was so popular that the first bus filled up and we had to wait for a second bus which of course delayed things somewhat.

Some of the best money spent on the trip...at least in my opinion...especially if you have a later flight (but not too late because there is a cutoff time) and want to go about town and do some things

Once we were even the "chosen" as we were told as we disembarked. We were told that they do a random search of a few groups of luggage from Luggage Direct and that time it was us. You know...when you're scanning your shipcard for the last time and the sirens go off...that was us. We were escorted right down into customs were all of our luggage was sitting on the tables there. They opened each piece and did a search...but then we were escorted right through the rest of customs right to the door...so no additional waiting. So for the bit of inconvenience it was actually nice to be escorted right through. We still got through before the rest of our family who didn't get pulled aside.

Even in FLL you don't see it until you get to your home airport.

Nice to see FLL changed their practice - finally! When we came into port in May 2013, we had to claim all our bags, take them all thru customs, then out to the vans. It was so much easier in San Diego where you leave it outside the cabin door and next see it at your front door at home. So VERY glad that FLL has recently made the change.

Do you know what the cutoff time is? Our flight isn't until 5:15 PM.

Just be sure your luggage tags have been printed with the correct destination. We noticed our tags read Charlotte NC, where we had a layover, and did not say anything about Richmond VA which was our destination. I questioned this at the front desk and was assured the tags would be changed in Charlotte. Thinking this was odd, when we arrived in Charlotte I went to customer service, explained the situation and they traced the luggage. It was on the carrousel waiting for me there. They quickly made alternate arrangements so it turned out the luggage arrived in Richmond on an earlier flight than ours and was waiting for us outside the luggage pickup office. Moral of the story is be SURE your tags state the correct destination.

Sorry...I'm not sure about the cutoff time, but it will be on the paperwork about the service in your stateroom. I want to say it was 5 or 6, but please don't quote me on that because I'm not sure.

I have been checking everywhere online and cannot find any info on the cutoff times. I do know that your flight must be after 12 noon. Contrary to what another poster said HAL told them, unless they have recently changed it, there is a cutoff time at the end of the day because on our last cruise our flight was too late to use the service.

I called HAL a few weeks ago to ask about the cut off time as my flight leaves 5:55 pm. The guy said no cutoff time. It's fine even if its that late. He sounded confident.

Thanks...I'll hope that's true! ;) I just checked our flight time: We're on Jet Blue at 5:13 PM. Hopefully that is OK.
