We have used Skype lots of times without problems. Use audio only.

Yes, just turn off the video since it takes up too much bandwidth. You can even put a Skype app on your smart phone - have the phone connected to wifi, and make your call. I use Skype any time I have to pay extra charges for placing a call (ship, out of the country) and I have access to wifi.

Yes, I've used it before. The video works but very poorly with a low framerate. I would stick with audio only. Sound quality was good. I would try to make your calls away from peak times, ie later in the evening or during meal times.

Good to know VOIP seems to work most times, Princess does say they may restrict it:

My son skyped me on our cruise to Hawaii... We were three days out in the middle of the ocean... I had my platinum Internet minutes, so it worked out wonderfully for me!
