cherylandtk Posted October 16, 2013 #2 Share Posted October 16, 2013 It seems it is usually blocked by ship due to bandwidth hogging. More discussin in this thread http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1905197

RSF Cruiser Posted October 16, 2013 #5 Share Posted October 16, 2013 Yes, just turn off the video since it takes up too much bandwidth. You can even put a Skype app on your smart phone - have the phone connected to wifi, and make your call. I use Skype any time I have to pay extra charges for placing a call (ship, out of the country) and I have access to wifi.

runnerodb83 Posted October 16, 2013 #8 Share Posted October 16, 2013 Yes, I've used it before. The video works but very poorly with a low framerate. I would stick with audio only. Sound quality was good. I would try to make your calls away from peak times, ie later in the evening or during meal times.
cherylandtk Posted October 16, 2013 #9 Share Posted October 16, 2013 Wifi packages start at about 69 cents per minute and go down in per minute price the more minutes you purchase up front. http://www.princess.com/learn/onboard/gifts_services/communications/index.jsp Good to know VOIP seems to work most times, Princess does say they may restrict it: * Internet access via satellite is significantly slower than high-speed connections on shore. Princess Cruises reserves the right to filter content accessed via the ship's Internet services. Please note high bandwidth consuming applications such as voice over IP telephony, peer-to-peer file sharing and streaming media may be restricted onboard Princess vessels. Working 2 Cruise Posted October 17, 2013 #10 Share Posted October 17, 2013 My son skyped me on our cruise to Hawaii... We were three days out in the middle of the ocean... I had my platinum Internet minutes, so it worked out wonderfully for me!
