Dancing Questions

In six years, I've gotten Gold Pearl status, I keep coming back because I have never found another cruise line that offers a more consistently good dance environment. I'm on Luminosa twice this winter in the Caribbean, both times with people who chose it because of the dancing.

Sure is a complete hive of activity in the evening! As mentioned...depends on which ship but many dance floors. And the change overs from different musicians was seamless and no down time at all. You could start at 7pm and go on until 2am if you want! And even then they will stay if there is enough of you still up and about!

Just returned from the trans Atlantic -- dancing every night. Great as always! Not much Argentine Tango music per se, but definitely some tangos and Viennese waltzes that were very danceable. We also did milonga to some of the meringues. Max will be cruise director during the Caribbean season -- sad news -- he said the "company" has decided against toga nights. Hopefully if a lot of people who cruise this winter request them, the "company" might reconsider -- I thought they were the highlight of the cruise and helped Costa stand out above the other cruise lines.

I didn't ask Max if both would be on the ship -- have never seen them work separately, but maybe they do???

Back to Argentine Tango -- there were dance lessons everyday -- both on the pool deck, and in the Grand Bar. There were six AT classes which were very popular. It was all very basic, but people enjoyed the classes. There were more people in the AT classes than any others. Just couldn't figure out why most of the participants were not on the dance floor in the evenings. Eduardo, the dance director, will be working the Caribbean season. He was on the Atlantica last year in the Caribbean.

Luminosa should have completed two Caribbean cruises now and I haven't yet seen any reviews. The TA crossing is the most recent member review (Smoking, smoking!) here in Cruise Critic. I'm still looking for dancing and entertainment details before our Feb 5 cruise.

if that's the title, i won't bother to find and read it. thanks for the warning.:p if you are so bothered by smoking, a little research would've saved you the trauma. wishing you more of the same on your upcomming cruise...

I didn't write anywhere in that last post I was bothered by smoke.

Only stated I'm hoping to see some entertainment reviews for the dance bands and shows.....

why do you lie about it? easy enough to prove you a liar:

"This went rapidly down hill when we realised Costa had such a bad Smoking Policy. All areas had smoking areas, but the problem was that non-smokers were overwhelmed by the smoke from these areas. Every night we went to our cabin smelling of smoke. I caught a cold after a couple of days, which was made worse by cigarette smoke."

pathetic or would that be pathological?

I don't understand those reviews about Costa's smoking policy, especially references to it being a Bad policy. Bad for whom? Try and stop being an egocentric person and look at it from other perspectives - just for a short while.

Having said that. I am not a smoker, and I have never had any issues with the smoking on board the Costa ships.

The ventilation system works very well, and I was never bothered with the smell of smoke - I really only noticed it when I was in the Casino, but it was nothing near annoying.

People that write about smoking issues on Costa ships, must be OVERLY sensitive or have a psychological disorder, e.g. just looking at someone smoking makes them smell smoke and cough, even though they are nowhere near the smoke itself.

Regarding the eatery choices. I do agree that I also would like to see Costa do something more in terms of eating options - I guess you can never go too far on that part as a cruise liner. However, I don't understand why people wouldn't opt to use the two specialty restaurants, Samsara and Club. The cover charge of 25 euros pp is a BARGAIN. Switch between the MDR, the Samsara and the Club and you have a lot of verity.

Costa could make a huge difference by logistically planning and placing their buffet stations differently, or separate them with gangway separators. The way they are now, people stand in the buffet queue, just to get to the omelet station and pasta station etc. this is annoying. And it also makes for confusion, as many Brits and Americans thinks that "Europeans" are jumping the queue, when they are in fact just knowing that you don't have to queue for the whole buffet just to get to a specific specialty station.

Gangway separators would be a great introduction, so it would be more visible, that these stations have their own queues, and not and extension to the whole buffet. They would have to come up with a solution as to how you get from the normal buffet queue to the station, to avoid having guests to queue twice.

I think she was just referring to another posters review, and was looking for more reviews of TA cruises. She wasn't the one that posted the review about smoking.

Finally there are two Luminosa reviews for the Eastern Caribbean itinerary just posted, and they aren't good - a one star and a two star. Fortunately they both give the ship, the entertainment and the itinerary good marks but neither of the reviews say anything about dancing, music, stage shows or the bands on the Luminosa.... which is the stuff I want to hear about.

We cruise for the entertainment and dancing and really don't care about food portions, bottled water or how long the life boat drills are!

You're right to be concerned about the credibility of a review that doesn't mention dancing. There are a couple of clues that might help.

One review whined about beer. I'm like most dancers, I don't use alcohol, so no sympathy. Anybody who drinks that much is unlikely to be a dancer, so no credibility.

The second said they like Holland America. I refuse to go back on one of those floating mausoleums. RCL, Celebrity- also woefully deficient in dancing, so they are obviously looking for something totally different than I am. From that review I have to ask, what was their travel agent thinking, booking them on Costa?

I agree that if you just want to waddle from one 4,000 calorie feeding station to the next ("portions too small"- ????), Costa is a bad choice. I've always found something I liked- some items are pretty good. Expect a degree of European formality, not the in-your-face, I'm-your-friend, drink-of-the-day service you get on American-market ships.

I still haven't found any line that offers better dancing than Costa (although my last trip on Cunard rates an honourable mention).

Dancing was fab. Lessons daily on Luminosa in the med

The bands deserve a medal for their stamina!

I noticed the pro dancers encouraging singles to dance with them.

Re: smoking. I'm a non smoker and asthmatic ...I noticed it but did not bother me. Can imagine it would bother some, only when I walked through the casino in the daytime did I go "yuk" at the stake smoke smell.

If you are repulsed by smoke don't travel on Costa
