Hi, we are on the Splendor January 12. Like you we never travelled during winter and the cruise was soooooo cheap just couldn't resist. I figured by end first sea day the weather will be decent and then for 4 days it will be great......much better than dreary NYC days.

Yes Im thinking 2/3 days will be chilly/cold for the round trip.

I guess people just stay inside the ship...

I also booked a January cruise, couldn't pass on the price. I know the weather will be cold but it will be cold home too. I paid big bucks to cruise in the summer and had 4 full days of rain on the ship so there are never guarantees. I was on this ship last April and the fact that the big center pool area is all covered is a big plus.

I'm also on the Jan 20th sailing. I did hear on the Splendor that on the colder/rainy days they close the roof over the pool area. It is suppose to be comfortable enough to be out and lounge by the pool. I just don't know if it will be warm enough to swim with the roof covering the pool area.

Even if you only get 4 days of warm weather, that's still 4 MORE days than if you didn't go on the cruise. :D

Remember that the cruise is more than just being outside in the sun. Get your indoor activities out of the way on the colder days (shopping, casino, shows, games, etc) so that you can enjoy as much time as possible outdoors on your warm days.

Too early for us to book next Jan's dirt cheap sailing on the Splendor - vacation requests won't be processed till December at the earlier for Mrs. m at work - been tracking prices for Feb. as well (but not for winter/school recess weeks or president's weekend) - rock bottom GTY rates actually seemed to be gone now & prices higher overall, but still very competitive.

No matter what the weather is like on 1st. & 2nd. and last 2 sea days, it will be warm for 4 days - and, there is no possibility of shoveling snow & walking on icy sidewalk in NY. Plus, we save on winter heating bills & our kitchen is shut down, no dishes to wash or laundry to do - and no emails to answer or voice mail to screen with "vacation mode" turned on. What is there to worry - and, besides, the hurricane season is over and so what if we hit rough seas during the passage.

We're long at flying somewhere and RT air tickets in coach, as in the "economy" cabin on a narrow body to Europe for non-discount carrier is around $1,100 p/p round trip alone. Ouch - "honey, let's just grab a cabin - it has more legrooms & all the food that we can eat, and, it's a steal." If the price is right & your calendar is open and available, go for it. :D

Some questions about January Sailings on the Splendor.

Does anyone know anything about the condition of the outdoor pools on the Splendor on the January days that she is in NYC port?

IF it snows/freezes, does the water just get really cold or do they keep those pools heated at all?

IF they don't heat those pools, do the pools ever warm up enough by the time we get to warmer weather areas?

AND is the Deli and the Tandoor open on the first sea day and the last sea day?

I'm sailing on January 12th so I can let you know as I get off and you get on. I have been cruising out of NYC the past 10 Winters on NCL. We find plenty to do indoors the first and last sea day. Seas can be alittle rough until you get past Cape Hatteras. At least the Splendor has a dome over their pool. We were originally booked on The Breakaway for 2/2 Splendor was half the price with one extra day.

When we take our winter cruise we travel to Florida for 7 days of warmth.

Is this the Splendor itinerary of Nasau, Freeport and Pt Canaveral? If so think this is the worst itinerary they offer.

The other one is so much better with GT and HMC.

Thats what I thought. In three weeks we drive 900 miles to Florida for 7 days of warmth for the entire cruise.

See why you would want to do it if you live near NYC but looking at pictures of ship with a foot of snow on her last week does not make me think of cruising

I would not drive 900 miles for any cruise.

We are 20 mins from the NYC port. 4 wonderful sea days. :)
