NoName Posted November 18, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 18, 2013 We have an aft cabin booked for our upcoming cruise. I am wondering if the Gem ever "backed in" to a port? It would be nice if we had a good view of the dock every now and then. Thanks, Kim
rvsullivan Posted November 18, 2013 #2 Share Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) No backing in. Bow first or sideways with the thrusters, but backing in leaves the bridge "blind". You do get to see where you've been!!! Edited November 18, 2013 by rvsullivan
CROWNCRUISER Posted November 18, 2013 #3 Share Posted November 18, 2013 (edited) We backed into St. Maarten on 11/10/13. It is a refueling stop, port side is where they fuel ship. Edited November 18, 2013 by CROWNCRUISER
Rare Turtles06 Posted November 18, 2013 #4 Share Posted November 18, 2013 No backing in. Bow first or sideways with the thrusters, but backing in leaves the bridge "blind". You do get to see where you've been!!! Depending on the port, a ship may well "back in" to the dock. The Breakaway, for example, "backed in" to the dock in Nassau on Nov. 6. Here she is backing in to the dock, where she winds up across from the NCL Sky: (photos by turtles06)
OnTheGoMom921 Posted November 18, 2013 #5 Share Posted November 18, 2013 Day 5: Nassau, Bahamas. As the ship docked that morning, we were thrilled to see they were BACKING in, which gave us Front row seats from our balcony and a fabulous view of the Island!! Yes, the Gem most DEFINITELY backs in to Nassau, I just pulled this post from my 2012 Gem review
davy jones Posted November 18, 2013 #6 Share Posted November 18, 2013 She backed in at St. Martin on 11/1.
Brighton Line Posted November 18, 2013 #7 Share Posted November 18, 2013 Since the Gem leaves NY, she will "back" into the East River, you will have a splendid view of NEW JERSEY until you get underway. You will hear one long whistle for Vessel Underway followed by three short for I am operating astern propulsion. From your balcony if you look down you should see an Officer with a radio sticking his head out communicating with the bridge. View from Gem MDR: Gem Bow in at NYC port from the level the gang way is on. Just backed out of the slip (88) to the right of the Carnival ship: I'm going in 3 weeks and need to get better pictures :)
hateswaterloves2cruise Posted November 18, 2013 #8 Share Posted November 18, 2013 We have been on the GEM and other NCL ships where they have backed in to ports. It is nice to sit out and view the islands. One time we backed in to the front of another ship and we had a great view of their bridge  and they had a great view of us! As far as any of the other itineraries for the Gem depends on when they need to bunker Sent from my XT907 using Forums mobile app

bob brown Posted November 20, 2013 #14 Share Posted November 20, 2013 It's neat when two ships that have webcams are docked bow to bow, and you can see each other on the 'net....:)
