Kate6667 Posted November 20, 2013 #1 Share Posted November 20, 2013 This will be my first cruise. It's a 3 day to Nassau and we are there from about noon till 8:00 pm. I'm looking for suggestions. My husband wants to check out Atlantis. I heard something about the Fish Fry. That sounds good. Any suggestions? We're both in our mid-late 50's. We're not into the water activities like swimming, snorkeling, slides, etc. Thanks.
mjkacmom Posted November 20, 2013 #2 Share Posted November 20, 2013 You can't really check out Atlantis without some type of pass, unless you want to just go to the casino.
Kate6667 Posted November 20, 2013 Author #3 Share Posted November 20, 2013 Yeah, I know and it's not one of the things I really care about doing but he wants to so we'll probably spend the money. I just want to do something relaxing but fun. I don't know what though and I know we don't have a ton of time.
mamaza Posted November 21, 2013 #4 Share Posted November 21, 2013 I actually stole this list from someone on this thread: Some of what you are interested in overlaps with my itinerary, so I will just copy/paste some options: Junkanoo beach (http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showp...47&postcount=4) - nice public beach we can lay on and relax. Price: Free; umbrellas cost $5 Queen's Staircase - recommended view Price: Free Walking Tours (http://www.frommers.com/destinations...251010008.html) - really get to see the history of Bahamas (minus the rape and robbing). Price: Free Senor Frogs - drink Fish Fry (Oh Andros, Frankie Goes bananas. Anchorage, and Goldies) - All fried fish/lobster/conch. Heard it's fun to try. Cafe Matisse (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restauran...d_Bahamas.html) - rated #1 and could be an option to eat at while doing walking tour Pirate Museum (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractio...d_Bahamas.html) - I don't care what anyone does, I'm going to this. I want to see this. (left on George street where the jitney's line up. You'll see it on the right. ) Price: $12 Straw Market on Bay Street (http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=...&FORM=IQFRBA#a) - they sell a variety of straw type things, braid your hair etc. Do not buy ANYTHING on their first offer, they try to hustle you. Try to counter offer them at 3/5, and don't budge in price. It's fun to negotiate. You can walk away, and they will acquiese usually. Price: Very cheap Rum cakes - there are apparently 3 times of Rum cakes, Bahamian, Bacardi, and another one (the third one is very good but not local). I want to buy one. John Watling's Disillery (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attractio...d_Bahamas.html) - 1-2 hour distillery tour that allows you to see how they make local rum. Price: Free
steven.a Posted November 21, 2013 #5 Share Posted November 21, 2013 Queens staircase is a must. We got a cab and they took us on an island tour. Went to the old forts and queens staircase. Also saw Anna Nicole Smith's grave. It is a private cemetery but our cab driver was able to get us in. It was only like ten bucks a piece.
aavdev Posted November 21, 2013 #6 Share Posted November 21, 2013 We went here last year - been to Nassau a few times before, but LOVED Blue Lagoon. Here's the link: http://www.bahamasbluelagoon.com/ As soon as you go walk into the customs building (I guess that's what it's called - the only building to go in and out of the ship area) At the desk tell them you want to go to Blue Lagoon. They'll tell you where to go to get a bus which takes you over near Atlantis. They have a booth and dock area there - you pay for whatever excursion you want to do at Blue Lagoon (just swim and beach, Dolphins, etc.) and wait for the boat to take you. We went snorkeling and had lunch there - wonderful time, beautiful area. We watched people interacting with the Dolphins and you can watch them do their tricks for free. If we go to Nassau again we'll be going here for sure! During the boat ride to/from they tell you who owns the mansions along the shoreline (Oprah, Tom Cruise, many others). Makes for an interesting boat ride!
TS8213 Posted November 22, 2013 #7 Share Posted November 22, 2013 If you're cruising with Carnival, I highly recommend checking out the Balmoral Beach excursion. We just got back from the Bahamas cruise today and this was by far our favorite excursion. Beautiful, clear water on a semi private island (shared with Sandals). They have stingray or dolphin encounters there as well and the prices are very reasonable for what you get. Would definitely do again!
msia52 Posted November 24, 2013 #8 Share Posted November 24, 2013 We did the Tru Bahamian Food Tour and loved it. It is a three hour tour and was fantastic all around. We walked around and did some shopping in the Straw Market and on the main streets, did the food tour, then went snorkeling with Blue Hole Watersports, then more shopping. Great day all around. Highly recommend the food tour. Graycliff Chocolates were the best I ever had.
Kate6667 Posted November 24, 2013 Author #9 Share Posted November 24, 2013 Thank you all for the replies. I posted this very last minute the day before we left. It rained that day anyway so we just ended up at the straw market and back to the ship. It was still a great cruise and I am already thinking about the next one. We've only been home 4 hours!
