lsp Posted July 14, 2005 #1 Share Posted July 14, 2005 OK folks, for those of you in the dark, summertime is hurricaine season in the Carribean. June is still a pretty sure shot on being safe but it could happen. October & November is pretty safe but it could happen. That said, I would actually love to sail thru one. I guess that comes with age and wanting to do something different. I wouldn't do it on a small boat thought, only Conquest size. Could you imagine how much fun it would be to be out there? With the wind and the waves going every which way. I also live on the Texas Gulf Coast so I have been thru hurricaines in the past so I do know what there are. KenMo Posted July 14, 2005 #2 Share Posted July 14, 2005 I'm with ya on this one, Linda!! I want to book Miracle in Sept 06. Some in my group want to wait until Oct. Okay....I'll go along with that! I live in the Midwest and love thunderstorms! I think it would be kinda fun cruising with a little rough seas! Yeah...it would be a little disappointing to miss a port(s) or to have the cruise shortened by a day. But, if I'm booking during hurricane season....I know all that could happen going in. I think it would be a blast!!!
Cotton Posted July 14, 2005 #3 Share Posted July 14, 2005 Linda and Mona - how old are y'all?;) I don't think anybody's 'in the dark' about hurricane season. It runs June 1 through November 30 every year. The warmest months are the worst for hurricanes. I don't believe you'll have a lot of folks agreeing with you that it would FUN.
lsp Posted July 14, 2005 Author #4 Share Posted July 14, 2005 Cotton: I am 50 and proud of it. The trouble is no one knows how to have fun anymore. Linda
GoinCruisin Posted July 14, 2005 #5 Share Posted July 14, 2005 Okay, ask the people that just came off the Miracle how that last day was? People that never get seasick, were getting seasick. And they were not directly in a hurriCANE. Little hard to have fun when you can't stand up straight... also, if you go through a hurricane, you are going to be asked to stay inside... so with all the CONSTANT rocking, things perhaps falling all over the place, and having to be inside? I certainly know how to have fun, but cruising into a hurricane does not sound like fun... the Captain will not risk lives by doing so directly, they will cruise around them whenever possible... JrMafia90 Posted July 14, 2005 #6 Share Posted July 14, 2005 We travel during peak hurrincane season. Lat year we lucked out and got 4 exra days. This year I heard on the news that since it it hotter a lot of hurricanes will be happening in July and beginning of August as compared to end of August beginning of September. That doesn't mean there won't be hurricanes, it just means a less chance. So this is good news for us.
Sunrunner3 Posted July 14, 2005 #7 Share Posted July 14, 2005 I'm figuring that if the sea's get a little rocky it won't be any different than the cruise I was on last summer....450 passenger ship that rocked and rolled constantly!!!!
dmfriedman Posted July 14, 2005 #8 Share Posted July 14, 2005 Lat year we lucked out and got 4 exra days.Yeah, but those were MY 4 days you got, you thief! Give them back! :D
KenMo Posted July 14, 2005 #9 Share Posted July 14, 2005 Okay...Okay...I knew I'd get blasted for my post!! BTW, Cotton, I'm getting close to Linda's age...not a kid by any means! And it seems like some are in the dark about when hurricane season is because when there are problems, they all act like Carnival owes them something. Also, I didn't say cruise into a hurricane....just a little rough seas, which I have been through before. I did have a friend on Miracle last week, she never said anything about getting sick. The pax could not have been told to stay in their cabins, because they went back out into internatinal waters so they could open the casino/shops/etc. I'm just saying....when you cruise during hurricane season, you have to expect the unexpected. I wouldn't do it on a small boat thought, only Conquest size. I think some of the folks on our Conquest sailing would respectfully disagree. We were well out of the hurricane's path this past Sunday morning. but it was very rough and a number of pax became ill. While this was only our second cruise, DH and I have a fair amount of time in both sailboats and powerboats - we have a 25' Lyman cabin cruiser - and have gone through rough seas before, but we found Sunday to be a fairly uncomfortable ride, at least until the afternoon when the storm passed. lsp Posted July 15, 2005 Author #12 Share Posted July 15, 2005 I guess what I really would like is to see some really big waves and a really good storm at sea. Sail in and Sail out. Everyone takes things to serious. I know it's dangerous, not fun for most and people do die. It's just one of those once in a lifetime things I would like to do. They should have a storm chaser cruise. Now that would be a theme I could get into. Take Care!!

You may have misunderstood, I did not say the Miracle passengers had to stay in their cabins... if you cruised THROUGH a hurricane, you would be requested to stay inside... and not just "hang out on deck", but that is THROUGH a hurricane, which the Miracle did not cruise through... most ships try to avoid this. I know that the reports that came back, people that never get seasick, were looking for bonine... that has to tell you something, and they were just cruising in a very churned up gulf... I cruised through a really nice storm, nothing bad, nothing dangerous, and yes, it was nice... but after having been fortunate enough to live through several hurricanes, and see what they do, there is NO WAY I would WANT to actually cruise through one of those... no thanks... 140MPH winds, and a ship? Nope, not this gal :D

Linda I sailed through a tropical depression on a 48 foot sloop and can tell you that it is not fun. For the recored, a sailboat is the most stable boat you can be on in rough seas and it scared the bejezuz out of me. You don't sail through waves, they crash on the boat. Hebejeebe Posted July 17, 2005 #19 Share Posted July 17, 2005 I'm hoping that the Miracle Captain learns to steer further away from the hurricanes. No sleep during the previous night and then unloading the ship at 2am doesn't sound like a very fun way to end the vacation.
