Floyd and elayne Posted January 2, 2014 #5 Share Posted January 2, 2014 Hello.. I am on the same BI cruise as you and do know that there is a free shuttle bus service in Belfast. I contacted Belfastcitysightseeing.com for info on the Hop on Hop off bus, and they informed me that the free shuttle brings you to Donegall Place in the City Centre. See you onboard, Elayne
onthebalcony Posted January 2, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted January 2, 2014 Thanks Elayne. I had some info in my notes but couldn't remember the details. I have been active in the roll call as well. Happy New Year! Anne
Wirral Posted January 3, 2014 #7 Share Posted January 3, 2014 Don't know about other places but do know Liverpool. I live over the water from there on the Wirral. The ship will dock on the water front and it is easy to walk to most places from there. The 3 Graces (the 3 large buildings along the front including the Liver building with the famous Liver Birds on top) are on the water front as is also the new Liverpool museum. A Hop On Hop Off bus goes from just in front of the ferry landing stage. This will take you to the Cavern, the 2 cathedrals, the museum and the Walker Art Gallery. The Tate Modern is at the Albert Dock again on the water front. It is also worth taking the ferry to see Liverpool from the water. During the day it does a cruise with commentary stopping at Liskeard and Birkenhead, but most people just do the full circle from wherever they got on. Hope you have a great holiday. TheWren Posted January 3, 2014 #9 Share Posted January 3, 2014 (edited) Cruise ships dock directly in Cobh town (which is the port for Cork city). Cork city is about 24km away. http://www.portofcork.ie - a poor website, but look under "Cruise Facilities" and there's a downloadable brochure "Port of Cork Cruise Brochure". You don't need a shuttle bus (unless you are bypassing Cobh). When you get off ship, turn right, it's a 5 minute walk into the small town/village. You pass the train station on your right before you get into the town. visitcobh.com http://www.johnthemap.co.uk/pages/cork/cobh.html Cobh visitor attractions include : the Titanic Experience - telling the Titanic story from Irish viewpoint of those departing from Cobh (formerly called Queenstown); the Queenstown Story Heritage Centre - exhibition of the history of emigration, famine and transatlantic maritime travel from Cobh. the "Titanic Trail" walking tour - Learn about Titanic, Luisitania & Cobh. Every day, all year, leaving at 11am from the Commodore Hotel, there is a charge. http://www.titanic.ie/tours/the-titanic-trail Mini Tourist "Train" (on the road) around Cobh : From 11am (on the hour), takes half an hour around Cobh. €8 * The County is called Cork, and it's main city is also called Cork. (Cobh is in County Cork). Railway - to Cork (city) : Weekday trains to Cork operate every hour on the half hour. Takes 24 minutes. http://www.irishrail.ie/cobh Get off at Kent station. Cork City - has a "Hop-On Off"Bus Tour running March to November http://www.corkcitytour.com/ Also, 10 minutes away on the train from Cobh (before it reaches Cork city) : - Fota Wildlife Park : It is a 15 minute walk from Fota railway station. http://www.fotawildlife.ie/ - Fota House & Gardens : is next door to the wildlife park. It is a 15 minute walk from Fota railway station. April to Sept. http://www.fotahouse.com These are approx 10km east of Cork city. The national tourism organisation's website is called "Discover Ireland" : For Cork area info : http://www.discoverireland.ie/places-to-go/cork Have a look under the Tour Guides & Information section for a pdf of "Cork City Self Guided Walk", etc. Good luck ! :) Edited January 3, 2014 by TheWren
onthebalcony Posted January 4, 2014 Author #10 Share Posted January 4, 2014 TheWren, Thank you so much for all the information on Cobh (Cork)! I saved all the websites you suggested in my favorites for the cruise. Looking forward to visiting Ireland for the first time!! Anne
Happy Cruiser 6143 Posted January 4, 2014 #11 Share Posted January 4, 2014 I highly recommend the HoHo bus in Liverpool. It was WAY more reasonably priced than HoHo buses in other cities. Do not miss the remodeled library in Liverpool--it's awesome. On the ports of call board is a thread by Towncar T which has all sorts of wonderful information about Liverpool. We did not go to some of the ports on your cruise, but I do not believe that the other ports have a free shuttle into town. We didn't even have one to Dublin last spring, so I am surprised at that. If you choose to stay in Cobh, which is a lovely town, there is a little train which will take you around for a modest fee. Enjoy your cruise! onthebalcony Posted June 9, 2014 Author #13 Share Posted June 9, 2014 Are there any updates on the shuttles for this cruise? I have read that the Belfast shuttle is free and then read that it is $15/person.
alcpa1 Posted June 9, 2014 #14 Share Posted June 9, 2014 The Belfast shuttle was free on May 19th. The best bet for Cork, if you want to go to Blarney Castle is Paddy Wagon Tours. They use smaller vehicles than e coach and include the ticket price for the Castle. BTW, the gardens were fantastic when we were there and the prices at the Woolen Mills were really very fair. We took a tour away from Liverpool so I can't help with the HOHO. We also had a private tour in Dublin but saw the HOHO's everywhere. FYI, if you want to go to Guinness or Jameson try to arrange tour times in advance of your arrival. The lines for the library and the Book of Kells could be long. It seems we were there on a slow day. Our itinerary did not include your other ports. Have a wonderful cruise.
