We just want to get to Tortola, and ask a cab driver to give us a tour of the island. We're not interested in most of the tours we've seen. Is this something people do?

Yes, there will be many taxis waiting at the dock looking for fares. You'll just have to ask around for prices. You should be able to get a tour for around $20 per person for a 2-4 hour tour. Taxis will be regular cars , vans or open air safari buses. Drivers with vans and safari buses will want to have more than 2 passengers and will wait to try and fill the bus. A private tour will be more expensive than a group.

Yes the drivers at the port entry will ofer various tours at different prices. Beautiful island to see, and add a lunch/beach stop too.
