Excursion or not?

DH and I will be at this port in mid-March via NCL. We are contemplating a shore excursion but nothing is really jumping out at us as "must do". Is this a tender port or dock? When exiting the ship, is there shopping or anything right at the pier or is a must to go into town?

We did NCL last month and docked at Coxen Hole. You need to do a tour here or shop in the tourist trap at the pier. If you go outside the tourist village you will be MAULED by vendors. We thought that we would walk to some local stores instead of shopping at the pier. It was so bad we didn't go 50 yards from the gate and said to hell with it. We went back to the ship. This was our third trip to Roatan. The other trips we took a taxi to west end and west bay to snorkel. Worked swell, had good snorkeling and didn't have any problems. If we go back I will definately book something.

Ronystours is great. We always tour with Rony. You can book his "freestyle tour" and have your own driver for the day. Come and go as you please - ziplining, monkeys, iguanas, fabulous beaches. Roatan is beautiful. Definitely recommend booking an excursion with Rony in advance.

Funny ,we have been to Coxen four times and have always done a tour or something on our own, but we always end up shopping and drinking a beer or two right on the street outside the gate. We have never been mauled as someone said, or harassed any way whatsoever there..We have walked from one end to another and have always thought it to be less vendor pressure than Mexico..Maybe it;s how you conduct yourself ? I just say politely no gracias, and just never seem to have a problem.
