Bill B Posted January 14, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 14, 2014 I was looking forward to making coffee with the machine provided in the staterooms on the neoRomantica. However, I have read - to my surprise - in reviews it is 'chargeable' (I assume on the minibar account). How exactly does the machine work? Could it be used to heat water for instant coffee? jonad Posted January 14, 2014 #2 Share Posted January 14, 2014 I believe it can. We didn't try it, but other cruisers did.
soccerref Posted January 14, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 14, 2014 The machine uses coffee pods which are charged per pod. We found that if you fill the water reservoir and follow the instructions without inserting a pod then you get just boiling water. We took our own tea bags and instant coffee but 'borrowed' coffee mugs from the buffet and enjoyed our early morning brew-up!
Bill B Posted January 14, 2014 Author #4 Share Posted January 14, 2014 Okay, thanks. I'll take some Nescafe and steal sugar & cream from the buffet - I assume the coffee pods are expensive. I have a small, Black & Decker 'Brew 'N Go' drip coffee machine I bought for cruises years ago... but it's in Canada and I'm in China (although I do have my tux). JosieS Posted March 15, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 15, 2014 By pods, do you mean the ones like are used in the Keurig machines? Why couldn't we bring and use our own?
Salve Posted March 15, 2014 #6 Share Posted March 15, 2014 By pods, do you mean the ones like are used in the Keurig machines? Why couldn't we bring and use our own? If they are the same of course you could!
JosieS Posted March 15, 2014 #7 Share Posted March 15, 2014 Thanks! Now who knows if they are the same as Kuireg?
Rare steamboats Posted March 15, 2014 #8 Share Posted March 15, 2014 Keurig won´t fit! On the neoRiviera it´s the Dolce Gusto system by Nescafe. I read reviews that one pod is free and all others are 1.50 Euro. I´m thinking about buying a package (16 or 18 pods) and bring it with me :D! steamboats
Salve Posted March 15, 2014 #9 Share Posted March 15, 2014 Thanks! Now who knows if they are the same as Kuireg? I can't help you there. I have been on a lot of their ships. Just not the NEO class.
JosieS Posted March 15, 2014 #10 Share Posted March 15, 2014 Thanks very much! I can buy Dolce Gusto pods here for about $.50 each, so we will do so!
cruisefanatic16 Posted March 29, 2014 #11 Share Posted March 29, 2014 (edited) so if i use the coffee maker for boiling water on the neoriviera i will not be charged? it is a good idea to bring your own nescafe dolce gusto pods :) Edited March 29, 2014 by cruisefanatic16
Rare steamboats Posted March 30, 2014 #12 Share Posted March 30, 2014 I bought a box :D and will give it a try. It´s less than 5 Euro for 16 café au lait. So not much waisted if it doesn´t work out or if I don´t drink all of it (and leave the rest in the cabin). steamboats
cruisefanatic16 Posted March 31, 2014 #13 Share Posted March 31, 2014 are you sailing on the neoriviera? when? so boiling water in the coffee maker is free..?
Blondie008 Posted March 31, 2014 #14 Share Posted March 31, 2014 Ive been on NeoRomantica twice - I am pretty sure it was Lavazza pods which were in the coffee machine. I doubt you could boil it as a kettle - But room service will do tea/coffee .. You dont need to use the pod machine although it makes a decent espresso. cruisefanatic16 Posted April 1, 2014 #15 Share Posted April 1, 2014 thanks for your info I only need coffee early in the morning when we wake up :) we are booked a premium cabin so room service is free i think? how did you find the service on the neo ships? is it different from the normal costa ships? i have been on the favolosa so far
Rare steamboats Posted April 1, 2014 #16 Share Posted April 1, 2014 I´ll be on the neoRiviera over Easter. As I don´t know the Dolce Gusto machines yet I can´t tell you whether they do work without a pod and just produce hot water (which of course is for free, you pay for the used pods). steamboats

tjandluke Posted April 1, 2014 #18 Share Posted April 1, 2014 Have not been on the neo ships so can not comment on the exact machines they have on board. I do have a Dulce Gusto machine at home which I use all the time. You are able to use it to heat water. Pods from some brands will fit the machine others will not... eg in Australia I know that the Lavazza pods do not fit the Dulce Gusto machine.. there is supposedly some way to make them fit by using a pin to pierce the pod but I have never done it so no idea how. Owlhelm Posted April 3, 2014 #19 Share Posted April 3, 2014 Do they not take food and drink off you at embarkation? That's what I've been led to believe.

Rare steamboats Posted April 8, 2014 #23 Share Posted April 8, 2014 I do have friends who travel with their Bodum french press and their own coffee :D! I´m not quite sure whether coffee pods are regarded food or drink or nothing of both... steamboats
Rare steamboats Posted April 23, 2014 #24 Share Posted April 23, 2014 Just to report back: No problem carrying on the coffee pods (it´s Dolce Gusto on the neoRiviera, 2 pods are free, additional are 1.50 Euro each). No problem carrying on a bottle of water. steamboats
kdttree Posted August 21, 2015 #25 Share Posted August 21, 2015 Noticed no info re ability to use coffee machines for hot water. One person said it was possible! (On Costa Neo Romantica)? On Princess, Celebrity and Royal Carribean always had access to water, tea and coffee. Surely water, tea and coffee must be available throughout the day without having to pay for drinks package etc. Can you use the water from tap in cabin?? Thanks for any info.
