rahrah50 Posted January 16, 2014 #1 Share Posted January 16, 2014 A group of 6 wish to do a Baltic Cruise on Holland America. I just called Holland America and was told they allow smoking in the rooms. Is this true??? I don't want a smelly room for my cruise.... This just seems hard to believe...... Unbelievable that a HAL rep would tell you that! NO smoking in the rooms - only on the balconies or a few designated public places. Anyone smoking in a room is charged a cleaning fee - $200 IIRC. Edited January 16, 2014 by jtl513
sail7seas Posted January 16, 2014 #3 Share Posted January 16, 2014 No HAL ships permit smoking in cabins. HAL still permits smoking on verandahs. There is only one interior space on HAL ships where smoking is permitted and that is casino and only if you are actively gaming.

Cruise line reps give out way too much incorrect information. They are not always well trained and some have little experience.
rahrah50 Posted January 16, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted January 16, 2014 Thank you for the information. The Holland America itinerary sounds like what we want but I was not going to book with a line that allowed smoking in the cabins. Has anyone been on a verandah next to someone who is smoking??? Can you smell the smoke??? That is still a concern for me.

We've had times where the verandah has been unusable due to smokers but only once out of quite a many cruises on HAL. It's the luck of the draw, though as always we wish HAL would eliminate the option entirely.

I suggest you look at Celebrity Cruise Lines where smoking is prohibited in rooms and verandahs. Why take the chance? It's hard to believe someone at HAL told you smoking was allowed in cabins. Someone didn't read the memo! Edited January 16, 2014 by kjw869
jtl513 Posted January 16, 2014 #8 Share Posted January 16, 2014 Has anyone been on a verandah next to someone who is smoking??? Can you smell the smoke???Sometimes. Our last cruise was on Disney and we had a smoker below us that bothered me but not DW.
rahrah50 Posted January 16, 2014 Author #9 Share Posted January 16, 2014 I think Holland America has moved down on the list of possible cruise lines for this trip.
Rare PatriciaF Posted January 17, 2014 #10 Share Posted January 17, 2014 Princess has recently changed to Celebrity's restrictive smoking policy. It was heavily monitored for compliance on our Feb 2013 Coral Princess cruise. We are the Eurodam for a Baltic Cruise in May--we would have been on Princess but I think the Royal is way too big. I am concerned that all the smokers will be on this cruise as it is the last one where you can smoke on your balcony. Haven't been on HAL since 1997 and if there is too much cigarette smoke--may not be on it again for a LONG time. Note regarding customer service rep: better advice here or actually reading the HAL website
