Free Time in Bergen to see Floibanen, Before Boarding Ship?

BORDER REIVER

Our flight arrives at Bergen at 12.15pm and I believe that we will be transported to the Hurtigruten Pier as part of our package. We're not certain yet what happens after that and how much time we'll have to explore.

We've been to Bergen twice, but haven't been on the Floibanen railway yet and it sounds like a good place to visit if the weather is decent.

We didn't try it on our previous visits because there were a few large cruise ships in Bergen and it was VERY busy.

Can anyone tell us, roughly how long it would it take for us to walk to the Floibanen station from the Hurtigruten Pier and if there will be enough spare time to do that?

It takes about 15/20 minutes to walk to the Floybanen terminal. There should be a much much smaller queue in the winter time (we went there in March 2012 and there were two other people waiting!).

On the way there (or on the way back) you can take the "small" roads which are in the middle of this map. It goes up- and downhill but the roads are very charming, small and narrow and with colorful houses all along the way.

You are allowed to go on board from 4pm (but later if you want) and in your cabins from 6pm so you have plenty of free time in Bergen. Your luggage will be taken care of in the terminal as you get there with the transfer bus.

Many thanks again SarniaLo. That's sounds perfect, all we need is good weather, although we'll be arriving with wet weather gear in our rucksacks anyway.

I'd go up even if the weather doesn't look that good. When we went up last January (there were hardly any people at the top and no wait to go up), it was clear with some clouds. While we were at the top a snow cloud came in - it was fascinating to watch the city and harbor get obliterated by the snow/clouds, and then clear again. The weather can change quickly, so even if it's raining or snowing, the weather may change.
