Fire on Breakaway yesterday morning

We just got off the Breakaway today. There was a fire in the VIP section of the casino yesterday morning. We were in the buffet having breakfast when it was announced there was a fire in the casino. They asked everyone to go to their cabins. No one was allowed on 6,7,8 center ship. Cleared up about an hour.

No mention on the board. I'm sure they didn't want any publicity of it. There was a scheduled Q & A with the officers yesterday. The CD announced that no questions of the fire could be asked before they brought the suits out.

I'm washing clothes now and the clothes I had on yesterday smell like burnt plastic..

Another thread said it was an electric transformer -

Oh my goodness, should we ban electricity on ships then? ;) :D

I was in the casino at the time and they did a great job of immediately clearing everyone out. The Captain and CD came on every 5 mins. to keep us updated and to assure us that the teams had been dispatched and a fire had been detected. The Captain explained that the cause was a transformer in one of the machines. He told us that there were no flames but it caused a lot of smoke. Like sunshine55 said' date=' we were told by Captain Svedung to stay in our cabins.

There was no panic. I went up to the Garden Cafe on deck 15 and people were there listening to the continual announcements but basically carrying on. Had to walk the entire length of the ship and down several flights to get to my cabin and everyone seemed very calm.

Speaking of calm, sunshine55 can you believe what an unbelievably smooth ride we had down to the Caribbean and back? We take this same cruise about the same time every yr like you do and we couldn't believe it! In addition, we were midship but even people we talked to way aft were impressed at how stable a ship Breakaway is.

Too bad we had some rain off and on in the islands but we were able to still fit in some good times in the sun and plenty to do inside.[/quote']

Glad it wasn't serious, sounds like you had a good cruise.

Hi Barb!! Yes it was quite smooth coming back. Going out I did not take a pill and felt a little crappy the next day but by dinner time I was fine.

Andrew from our CC group was also in the casino when this all happened and saw the smoke. I've heard three reasons and don't care what caused it as long as it all ended well. We took a walk down there right after and the smell was quite strong down there. They closed glass doors to prevent anyone from going into the area where the smell was very strong. We had a fireman in our group and he knew what the smell was..

Barb, we'll be back next February. What about you??

I was standing right there in front of the fire, not really flaming fire but heavy smoldering smoke which filled up the room like burnt toast. From the smell you could tell it was definitely electrical. The announcement emergency code (in Italian) went off as the crew moved everyone out of the casino and the steel doors shut automatically. We were pushed to O'sheehans. When the emergency staff went back in and when the doors opened, the smoke was so thick and black you could not see to the other side of the chandler in Ocean 678. The Staff handle this with great professionalism and announcements were made every 5-10 mins to keep everyone updated. The non-event lasted 15mins but they they kept the area close from about 9:30 to 12:30 to remove the smoke smell and close off the area. At no time did I feel that they didn't have control. The ship must have lost a bit of money that morning in the casino because it was a cold last day outside and everyone was enjoying inside activities. I have to tip my hat to the crew, they did what they were trained to do.

Good addition to the information. Thanks.

We were happy to see that no passengers appeared panicked and were very calm. Hopefully, we won't witness that smell again on a cruise ship.

Thanks for sharing these details. It is reassuring to know that the crew reacted as they did.
