Odd people above us. WWYD?

I didn't post a review from when we took our cruise back in December. We were on the Pearl in an aft balcony 10668 and the room itself was awesome. My husband loved it, with a few exceptions.

 

The first being that most of the time it smelled like the casino (smoke). No I'm not here to complain about smokers, but every day our balcony was covered in ashes, and the chain smoking guy above us was out there a good 75% of the time we were.

 

What got me upset was this, one night it was gorgeous out. So much so that we put towels on our loungers, grabbed our pillows, and decided to maybe sleep on our balcony. Well, chainsmoker (that's what i'm naming him) and his wife must have seen our feet and that we weren't moving and thought they were cute and hung their camera down there on a timer and took a set of 3 pictures of us snoozing. The flash woke us up (thankfully we aren't nude sleepers or they'd have pics of naked fatties sleeping) and we said something to them, and they told us to "f off."

 

I was mad and went to the desk, but NCL did nothing about it, and kind of laughed. I would maybe expect that crap from teenagers but these were adults in their 40s, possibly 50s (and we are in our 30s).

 

The next night we were sitting on our loungers (awake) and they once again sent their camera down. Part of me wanted to knock it into the water, instead we both flipped them the bird and called security again. With nothing done.

 

Has anyone ever had annoying people above them on the aft balcony? Should I just not be on deck 10 again because it extends out?

 

Honestly I know its a petty issue, but it kind of tarnished our first balcony experience and make me want to knock on their door at 3am and flash a camera in their eyes.

 

Other than that the cruise was nice except for really slow service in the MDR. Our cabin steward was a gem. Always attentive, learned our names, and made fantastic towel animals.

Instead of going to the desk I would go to their door. If they didn't like that, I might fudge the truth a bit and tell security they are dropping hot ash/embers.

 

Sounds like a couple of inconsiderate drunks above you I wouldn't let it turn you off to the aft balconies. Most folks report no problems there except for the occasional dropped foodstuffs from deck 12...

That's outrageous! I would have been very angry about that. I probably would have knocked their camera off the balcony the second time, but that's me. :rolleyes: The smoking is bad enough, but I get it, they're allowed to. But the camera is a whole different thing intruding on your privacy, etc. I would have contacted NCL hotel director to handle. To me that is a serious breach of privacy, and security, for that matter.

 

Nothing like this has every happened to us on our balconies.

On the Jewel I was on deck 10 aft penthouse. We had kids spit onto our balcony. My bf ran up there so fast and confronted the kids.

 

If what happened to you on a cruise I was on, I know after the first incident my bf would have went up and confronted them and if it happened a second time their camera would've ended up in the ocean bc he would've knocked it into the water.

 

People do the dumbest things. It's disgusting how people can be.

Wow you were nice to them. I would have destroyed that camera. That camera would have been used as a pinata, or football. People are so rude sometimes! What a shame you were harassed like that. I admire your will to be the bigger person.

Since NCL laughed it off, and were not of much help, I would wander the ship, til I found the biggest, meanest looking guy, and have him pay a visit to their door, to politely request them to stop.

Hopefully someone big enough to send them airborne with a good view of the back of the ship before they hit the water.....make sure they take their camera with them, you would hate to have them miss a good shot of the ship.;)

If customer service laughs you off, if security doesn't do anything, call the Hotel Director. If he can't do anything, your only other recourse is a letter to corporate after the cruise.

I tried to just let it go, but it still irks me. Didn't know if I should bother writing corporate since it was a guest and not their staff harassing us.

If the security people who responded did not do anything and Guest Services laughed, I would have insisted on talking with the HD and the Staff Captain. This is a serious breach, harassment, and a type of assault.

 

They weren't snapping photos of you across a room--they were stalking you at night. Totally creepy.

I would not have let it ruin my cruise but i would have grabbed their camera and not given it back to them until they came down and apologized

Right. It's not like we are supermodels or famous. We're actually chunky (not morbidly obese or anything, but not what anyone would call a hottie). It was like *** is so amusing about us snoozing on our loungers? And the cameras that are mounted on the deck with the food area should have caught their activities to back up our story had anyone bothered to look into it.

Sorry you had to have this experience. We were in an aft ph in dec and although we had a little trash from deck 12, we sure didn't have anyone doing annoying things like that, sounds really creepy.

 

You were very nice to give them their camera back. I might have done the same, although I'd probably have just tossed it up to them......hmmm my aims not very good though...probably would have landed in ocean... :eek:

 

You'll probably never have this type of experience again so don't let it ruin your future cruises.

 

I would write to main office as well and express your disappointment at the way it was handled when you brought it to those on the ship.

That is outrageous!! I would have been pissed!! I would have knocked the camera into the ocean the second time! I also spent a couple nights sleeping on the lounger on our balcony on our recent POA trip and would have been totally creeped out if I knew someone was taking pictures. Add chain smoking to that and I would have been totally enraged! Sorry you had to experience that.:mad:

Incredibly creepy. Reminds me if the stories you hear about perverts spying on people in public bathrooms. I would have grabbed the camera and called security when they started banging on my door to get it back. That might have gotten some notice!

Creepy, yes. Uncalled for, you bet. Childish to the nth degree, absolutely. BUT. There is no expectation of privacy on an open balcony. Any retribution on your part (taking the camera, knocking it into the water, etc.) would have just backfired on you and given security a reason to take you to task for theft or destruction of property. This is one of those unfortunate situations that cruise lines can do nothing about- the boorish behavior of one passenger against a fellow passenger. (And believe me, I would think about using that camera as a pinata myself.)

Okay, I agree. But there is still no assurance that an open balcony is private so there is little to nothing the cruise line can do. Everyone is saying "take the camera", "break the camera", "throw the camera overboard" and those actions would make security take action- against you, maybe even getting you chucked off the ship at the next port.

I am in total agree with you here sparks. Probably the unfortunate part for me would be that I would react before putting logic brain in gear and would have to agree with others that say the camera would then be owned by some fishies.

 

I actually wouldn't take it and keep it, that would be theft.

 

I like the one poster's idea of grabbing it and throwing it "back" to them, oops sorry it was a bad shot. :D
