Are there taxis/ mini buses portside at fiord ports? Like to do our on thing on port days but not visited fiords before. Have looked at P and O excursions and just wondered how easy to do independently. Any recommendations?

Most Norwegian ports are walkable from the ship - Bergen, Stavanger, Oslo etc. Others such as Olden will need an excursion really to see more of the countryside. Taxis (and excursions generally) will be very expensive in Norway! P&O have warned us that on our forthcoming Northern Lights cruise we could pay up to £14 for sandwiches!

Bergen and Stavanger were our two main ports, At Bergen you take a short coach ride (5 mins) just to get you out of the dock area, and at Stavanger you walk easily from the ship.

At Olden and Andalneses there was very little ashore to look at other than the surrounding scenery. You would be as well to book an excursion. For us the spectacular Journey up the Fjords was better than the destination.

As previously mentioned Norway is very expensive indeed so eat well before you leave the ship LOL A simple lunch of two main courses and two cokes cost us £64:eek:

Alesund can be done independently. The ship docks in the town so plenty to see. We did a full day tour which despite the horrendous rain was amazing, but the town also looked really nice. We just didn't have time to see much of it.

Gerainger and Olden both have independent tour operators willing to take money off you.

The only port where there was very little was Flaam as most passengers go on the train.

It will depend which ports you are calling at and when you go. If you are out of the main season (June - August) taxis may be scarce. In most ports it is quite easy to book excursions independently and they are normally much cheaper and virtually as good.

Check the thread a few days ago from Bigfoot - there is a fair bit of info there.

We were also warned of the expense in Norway. In Stavanger we walked across to the other side of the port and explored that part of the town. Then we walked back to the ship for lunch and the loo.. then back in to do the old town! Worked very well.

See Big Foot's thread for lots of info on the Norway ports.:)
