Just back from Glory

Just back from the Glory and thought I would post some comments

Tabletops in DR look very good and thought I would have a problem with no tablecloths but not an issue at all.

New menu brings us some new items but does eliminate a lot of choices so overall have about half the choices we used to have. A lot less soups and other apps and much less choices in desserts as well.

Very little served family style, at our table of 7, only flat bread and calamari but only when 3 or more want the calamari. More common was the waiter serving out of a large platter.

I liked it overall but DW thought the choices were lacking.

Overall service very good a few hiccups with cabin steward. I upsold myself about two weeks before the cruise going from inside to OV front on deck 10.

Didnt realize I put us into a handicapped cabin until we entered cabin. Largest we have ever had but lots of unusable space for us. Strange there was no couch even though plenty of room for one.

However cabin steward came up with some strange things. When we asked for ice told us we had to get it from room service since we had handicapped cabin. Looked at him said it was ridiculous and asked for ice morning and night. He missed a few times but we had ice.

Asked for 4 large wine glasses in our room at all times. Told us he couldnt always get them and managed to get us a variety of glasses. In 22 previous cruises never an issue.

Otherwise he did a fine job.

DR staff was fine and did a great job with making sure they avoided serving DW food that would trigger her migraines.

Entertainment was rather poor overall

Playlist productions was even worse than we thought it would be. Made it thru 4 songs of Divas and told my wife I was going and she said good was waiting for me to say it. Didnt bother with other playlist stuff.

Went to one Hasbro show and think that it is really for 10 and under and why would they show this at night. Bunch of games with seemingly no skill involved at all.

Piano Bar Dave (forgot his last name) was excellent and we spent a lot of time there.

Comedians were so so. Three of them were black and pretty much talked about being black almost exclusively. They were much funnier doing regular comedy. Understand talking about what they know but at some point enough already.

Never thought I would ever say this but one comedian named Thea was much funnier at the two family shows we went to than her adult show.

The entertainment highlight was the table magician who would come around and do card and coin tricks at your table. He also did two evening shows and by far was the best entertainer. How sad for Carnival that it has come to this.

No showband and no rock cover group. Dont care that much about having a showband but lack of rock group is a big negative for us.

CD was new to us and as a mtter of fact has only been a CD for two or so weeks. Named Emmett but calls himself DR E. Was all over the ship and seems like a real people person. Think if he stays at Carnival willl do real well.

Ports were fine (W Caribbean) but missed Roatan due to windy conditions.

Overall not sure about our future with Carnival. Our next cruise is on Princess and until we hear about improvements in entertainment not going to rush back to Carnival.

Let me know if any questions and happy to answer.

They had a rib steak that was good. Ratatouille (sp) was very good.

Lamb shank that didnt have a lot of taste. Glad I ordered a backup entre that night.

For first time had to order side dishes separately and several nights forgot to do so and wound up with a very lonely looking main course.

Had different bread choices and the flat bread offered for whole table very good.

Water carafes were on table but generally waiter refilled glasses.

Pies were apple, rhubard, blueberry and cherry.

Blueberry was good and didnt care for rhubarb which was first time I have had it.

Cherry filling was rather congealed so didnt care for it. didnt have the apple.

Thanks for your review.

Im not sure that I understand correctly. When you mention the "for the table" items, that if less than three at the table ordered or wanted said item, then the waiter would serve from a tray?

Ever since this new menu was introduced, I cant seem to get a clear answer about these items. I am wondering if I am at a table alone in anytime dining, or it is just me and my Mom, will we be able to get an appropriate sized caesar salad, calamari? Is this for the table option available for tables for one or two?

I am booked on the Freedom later this year, and would not have considered another booking on Carnival, just based on the lack of my kind of entertainment, and now the possibility of different menus by then, but the price was too good to turn down. I will enjoy it no matter, but Im still curious about this "for the table " option.

Thanks for your review.:)

Thanks so much for your thoughts on the Glory!

We're on the Glory in May and I posted this question in an earlier thread today, but maybe you know the answer:

Do you know the order of the new menus on the Glory Western route? The ones posted had a different itinerary so I think the order is wrong:

http://zydecocruiser.net/menus/aNew/index.htm

If you know, could you tell me what the dinner was for Belize, Roatan and the last sea day? Was the second "formal" night Costa Maya?

ANY help would be much appreciated! We're trying to make a steakhouse reservation on the "worst" MDR menu night LOL:)

Sorry but not something that I would ever keep track of. Can always find something interesting to order.

We didnt go to Costa Maya but went to Belize.

Welcome Back!!!! Missed seeing your posts on the boards, and I actually thought you WERE on your Princess cruise:o:o

Overall, sounds like you had a great trip...

There will always be some hiccups, but I know for you, entertainment is HUGE. For us, not so much...... Hope they get their act together soon, as it seems to be a make it or break it for so many....

Welcome back Golfadj.

Had you been on the Glory before? What did you do at the other ports?

Magician going from table to table was the best entertainment? lol. That's sad.

This was fourth time on Glory.

Cozumel went back to Nachi Cocum

Belize Took the tender to shore, walked around for 10 minutes and went back. Got to ride back on our own tender. That was rather coool.

GC took a cab to 7 mile beach and went to calico jacks. Rented chairs for 5 bucks each and went back to the ship around 1 pm for lunch when we ran out of shade.

Table magicians shows were also very good but Carnival's entertainment has sure gone downhill.

There was a ventriliquist named Phil Hughes. We saw him several years ago and was ok (not really into that) and than a year or so later was the flyon. Went to the show and he did the same exact show. Watched for 10 minutes and walked out. He was on this cruise and didnt bother going.

Thank you. Princess is not for several months yet.

Mostly we had a great trip due to the folks we met and hopefully will get together with down the road.

Remarkably how you can meet someone and have so much to talk about on a cruise. One morning we were in the DR at 9 and didnt leave till after 11.

Love meeting new people on a cruise:D:D:D Cannot wait to see how Princess compares.......

I have seen a few other reviews, as of lately, of Carnival cruisers trying out Princess. I believe Spaniel Lover just did one, and I have to say, his pictures were gorgeous. Ship looked really nice....

Did you hear anything from the servers or other staff regarding the success (or not) of the new dining changes?

You say there was no rock band, was there a band at all along promenade near the casino? - There is usually one there and if not, I would miss it.

Did you see Sue on the way out? LOL - you were supposed do a "code wave" if you did see her. :D

Didnt ask the servers their opinion on the new menu.

There was either a salsa band or a man and woman doing singing but never stayed long enough to listen. Way to noisy there amd dont understand why most nights lounge accross from piano bar will sit empty and have a band play in the worst possible place?

Sue?????

Emmett has been the asst cd on Glory. At least he was in Dec. they entertainment crew was fun, but the production shows were a waste of time. We had issues with our cabin steward for the first time ever. I wonder if that's a sign of the higher mgmt on that ship.

Was the Piano bar crowded every night? PBE was Dave Filsinger. This is his last contract with Carnival he is going back to land.

Dave filled up the bar every night. One of the best we have sailed with.

He loves doing it but misses his family more and more.

Hope we can sail with him again

Stu, thanks for the review. I'm with you on the main shows on CCL, especially the Legends and Hasbro. Hasbro seems like it would be better accepted if moved to an afternoon time slot on a sea day. Legends, well how many times do I need to see Tina Turner, et.all.:(

DW and I have sailed Glory 3 times, all prior to 2.0 and new menus. She was our favorite ship, but seems with all of the changes, she may no longer qualify for that spot.

We have pretty much decided we will not sail a carnival ship that has playlist, hasbro and no rock cover band.

We like Carnival but they need to improve entertainment.

DW and I are looking at NCL Getaway for May-June. Also interested in maybe trying Princess. Looking forward to your review of your Princess cruise.
