Bringing Wine Onboard

That would have been my reaction, too. However, let me ask the OP (and others)......... is there ANY box wine that is decent? Frankly, I've never tried it and I'm curious.

 

As a point of reference, we don't drink expensive wines, typically staying in the $20-$30 a bottle range (store prices, not restaurant prices!!).

How does NCL charge your account if you bring a bottle on board? Do they scan your bags and charge if found? Can you carry a bottle on with you in your bags?

You should carry them on in your bags, as they won't deliver your cases to your room if they find bottles in them. You will have to go and collect them.

 

They scan all hand luggage when you go in, and charge the corkage there. Sometimes (usually depending on the port) they don't scan the bags, or they miss them, and you can get away without paying the corkage, but then you are restricted on where you can drink them. It's easier to just declare them when you board the ship rather than wait for them to find them.

The port security have a scan, but they are not worried as to whether you have booze or not.

 

So are you saying your bags are scanned again once you get on-board?

 

In some ports there is a duty-free type shop selling alcohol AFTER the port security.

 

Or is this simply done on a trust basis?

There are usually scans as you board.

 

One of the ports that has a duty free ship after port security is Barcelona. Sons people have reported being able to buy from there and take the wind onboard without paying corkage, but it sing guaranteed. I've done it twice and paid both times.

In Miami we had wine in a separate bag. One of the people at scanner escorted us to desk where wine was logged in and tagged. The corkage fee is charged to your account at that time.

In my opinion, there are some decent wines in boxes, and there are also some horrific wines in boxes. I bookmarked a thread from a few years ago; post 16 is especially helpful....http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1367992&highlight=

Some lines have limits. You might find one that allows all you want. Please share.

Yes, they do, but Disney's price point is no where near NCL's. I will take a cheaper cruise on NCL and pay the corkage fee and bring on my Diet Coke. I will still be ahead of the game.
