AT&T Shipboard Calls

Has anyone used the AT&T onboard phone service? Looks like you pay 30$ and can call out from ship for a max of 50 minutes with an additional fee for 50+. Texting is also available.

Just wondering how this works. Can you call from any port? From sea?

I need to stay in touch due to family illness. Internet is not really an option.

From my knowledge of AT&T's plans, the $30 plan gets you a bunch of minutes that you can use onboard any RCCL ship and, as long as you use it once onboard, in any Caribbean ports. This is a vast savings over the normal $2.49 per minute onboard and $2 or so on shore.

Note that (as of New Year's week) Reflection plus two other ships had glitches in their new satellite provider such that AT&T cell phones didn't work at all on the ship's cell tower. Don't know if this has been fixed yet.

Have any of you just used text messages? I have heard they run about 50 cents a text. Do you have to get a special plan for it?
