Appropriate Gratuites (Tips)?

I am cruising solo for the very first time and I want to be properly prepared. I use a cane so I will be receiving wheel chair embarkation and disembarkation, as well as red cap assistance through Penn Station in New York City both ways. What is an appropriate gratuity for their help?

I never give less than $5.00. At times it's more depending if I ask to make a restroom stop along the way.

I always tip $10., for a lot of reasons...

• I'm fluffy :)
  
• I have a POC in my lap, so they are pushing that too.
  
• They pull my carry on along as well
  
• They always ask if I need a bathroom stop
  
• They are generally very pleasant and personable
  
• They work hard for their money, and I can afford it :)
  

 

YYMV. I was very "poor lower working class" at one time, and now through the Grace of God and hard work I'm not. So I probably often over tip, but generally nobody complains.

Thank you for posting this question, since I cruise mobility challenged and solo. I appreciate all the input.

I don't know about the cruise part since I will be going on my first one in May and am in same boat re cane as you. However, I did use train extensively in oct and researched - I had 2 suitcases (1was carry on) and some smaller bags I tipped between 5-10$ overall but got extra help and service and was really well-taken care of that way. was worth it.

Thank you everyone! I do appreciate all the input. :) I do appreciate that they do provide the service for those of use who need it.

 

I have found an even easier way to get to the port - a local bus service has a "cruise express", which delivers you direct to the port. Before I booked Amtrak, they were sold out for this cruise. Since then, they have scheduled a second bus, on which I am now booked.
