I would research free Wi-Fi at your ports of call - much the better way to do it. The crew would be a good source of information as to the best Wi-Fi spots in the ports.

Sitting in a sunny bar with a beer - it doesn't really feel like work!

This.

There's a website we used last year, but I forget the name, where it listed every free wifi spot in each city all over the world. That worked 100 times better for us.

The ship's internet is horrible.

To answer your question, (thread title), it costs NOTHING to use your computer onboard. You can write letters or your trip itinerary/review in Word, you can track your onboard account with Excel, you can play any games on the computer, like Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Hearts, etc. All for FREE. :D

Now if you want to use the onboard internet service, they charge you, as others have stated. And apparently it is a very slow connection. So, best to use free wifi in ports.

I did have a question about an Alaska Cruise. We have a MiFi that goes on the Verizon network. Since most of this cruise is very close to the mainland of Alaska, do you think we would be able to pickup the signal for it?

If you download your email to the computer, then log off and read them - not too bad.

If you need to log into a web based email - it takes much longer.

We use it on every trip. Getting good to log in, out and then back in again. Under 10 minutes a session.

I live in Norway, and have a special internet subscription on my mobile phone for all Western Europe. Therefore quite often on a Mediterranean cruise when we were close to shore (sailing in and out of ports) I was online sitting on my balcony, thinking it would not cost anything extra. Well - I was wrong. Received a large bill from my telephone company after I returned home, for use they called "internet data at sea". And this was when sailing pretty close to the coast line.

Just would like to mention that when I didn't use the internet on my phone on board, I turned it off and left it in the safe in the cabin - to make certain no roaming charges were going on.... Well, I learned from my experience and now I only use internet on my phone when we are ashore, usually on a cafe or bar with free wi-fi. On board I find the internet connection from the ship so slow that it is not worth it, unless absolutely necessary. I only use a computer in the internet cafe on board on the last night of the cruise, to check in to my return flight and print boarding passes. And for that I choose to do it "pay-by-the-minute" (and that cost $0,75 per minute, and $3,95 as starting fee).

Have used wifi on ships for many years - yes, it is not as fast as it was 10 years ago, but I have never found it too bad.

Unless NCL is a lot worse than other cruise lines, and I doubt that.

We log all our devices on at once grab emails etc., then log off.

Of course we try and get free internet at the ports. But on a TA that is a bit harder!

+1

I managed to send and receive all my emails, and download my daily newspaper in the morning to my app, all within a couple of minutes, and I would log back on later on in the day for another email exchange. I also used Skype video calling with no problems for maybe 5 minutes a day.

You should be able to boost your minutes by quite a bit with vouchers.....first day boost, silver lats boost, and potentially the coupon booklet boost. I managed the first two, but forgot about the third.

100 mins plus the boosts was fine for a nine day.

thank you so much everyone to take the time to reply and help me out .

i`m hoping to get away with 10-15 mins a day max all i need to do is check email and a few quick replies so hopefully it want break the bank . sitting in a bar with a long cold drink whilst in port does sound the way to go on port days . do you think the drink would count as tax deductable as i have to buy it to use the internet ? worth a try don`t you think :D

This happens often, with people from other countries including the U.S.

The carrier you are using shows on the phone. But, folks do not look at it and then get burned.

Other folks have "unlimited intl texting", but it does not apply onboard the ship at sea. They learn the hard way.

Any European user should have a limit on their account automatically under EU law, unless they have opted out.

Also if you have a European plan (we can use our home data for £3 a day on Vodafone for example) - just make sure that you log onto a shore based signal. You can do this by not allowing your phone to auto connect to a network.

In any event it should show on your phone if you are connected to the ship.

Yes, this is the way to do it.

I have to keep in touch with work when I'm on holiday, with emails and some other bits via the internet. I log on, download my emails and visit any web pages I need, taking screenshots of the relevant information. I can then relax over a coffee for half an hour, write any replies, deal with the info I've captured and then log on to send my replies. I'm usually only online for 5 minutes or so.
