The Leonardo Express - Rome Airport to Rome

We've travelled to Rome to embark upon a cruise on a number of occasions however this time we are travelling to Rome for a city break.

We are travelling with Jet 2 and our flight arrives/departs from Terminal 3 at Fiumicino. We want to make use of the Leonardo Express Airport Train and I would be grateful if anyone can provide advice/tips such as how to get to the train station from Terminal 3, where do we buy tickets, do you have to swipe your ticket in advance of boarding the train?

Thank you in advance!

The cost for the Leonardo Express (LEX) is now 14 euro per person, and it can be crowded. Unless your hotel is walking distance from Termini station in Rome, it may be worth considering a taxi, especially if there are two or more people. The official taxi rate for hotels in the centro storico is 48 euro.

To get to the train station, there are two options. The one I've used involves turning right after exiting the customs area of the T3 terminal and following the overhead signs for the train station. This will take you down a longish hall, then you'll have to take an escalator DOWN in order to go under the road, and on the other side, you'll take a set of escalators UP (if they are working...) to reach the train station. It's all pretty easy if you just keep following the signs.

Once at the station you can purchase tickets either at a ticket window or at an automated kiosk (if you are lucky enough to have a chip-and-pin card).

Of course another, cheaper option is to take one of the express bus services from the airport to Termini -- some are as low as 4 euro per person, plus you are guaranteed a seat (which may not be the case on the LEX). Luggage goes below in a hold. A plus for me is that the buses (at least the Terravision bus) is easier to walk to with luggage than the train station.

There's more information here on the various options:

We have taken the train and the bus. We like the bus. For a start it is only 4 euro. The other plus is that you will always get a seat, and you will get a seat without having to make room for your luggage. The bus really does work for us.

Super easy to find once you get off your plane and are walking through the terminal. Just follow the hot pink signs - can't miss them.

Can't beat the price either! The last time we were in Rome we only came across one hiccup....the bus we were supposed to get on was jam packed and we had to wait 20 minutes for the next one. Minor delay....but we enjoyed the show of the Italians shouting around us! So much fun to be in the thick of it.

Thought so highly of it that we just booked our tickets for our upcoming trip. 4 euros is a steal!!

You can also get the stopping train into Rome. It is only 8E BUT it can be incredibly crowded at times.

It can be a VERY good option if it is more convenient for you to detrain at another stop in the city. These stops can actually be much closer to your hotel than Termini.

I cannot remember if the bus makes any stops. But we still prefer it!

There are signs leading to the train. Also, try not to leave your luggage unattended.
