Tangiers is more interesting but I enjoyed dinner at Rick's place.

Oh no not another Mosque/Church/Synagogue although some are interesting this is a modern Mosque(its interesting what you can do with OPM-other people's money)

Future travellers be aware its not the original Ricks Place......its some entrepreneurial be-fezzed guy setting up a restaurant, and fitting it out with old posters and tables.

But also keep in mind there is no original Rick's place. The movie was not filmed in the city or based or even based on the real layout/style of the city.

The city is a rat hole and stunk. The smell was bad we only spent a hour of the ship and did not feel safe. Would never ever go there again.

Agree it was a sh1thole. The market was full of tat and fakes. You couldn't make eye contact with anyone there for fear they would try to sell you a watch/belt/lighter/t-shirt/tat.

If I ran the market, I would get rid of all the crap vendors, and encourage proper artisan vendors to take stalls, selling locally produced stuff.

We've been to Casablanca 3 times.

Once staying in the city. Is it clean and pristine and sweet smelling? No. But then, if that is what we were looking for we would stay in our own clean, terribly boring cities. That's not why we travel.

Once we took a private tour to Rabat. Very interesting and got to see a chunk of the Moroccan countryside.

Once we took a ship's tour to Marrakesh. We virtually never do ship tours, but due to the distance opted for this one. Well worth it and reasonably priced (~$99 for a full, 10 hour day). Very interesting but Marrakesh would please many of the sterile seekers. It was surprisingly, with the possible exception of the Souk, extremely clean with lots (and a mean LOTS) of new buildings, both recently constructed and under construction.
