Independent Excursions & Rental Car in Skagway

We're on the Miracle in July and have a 14-hour stop in Skagway. In 2011, we booked the Rail Adventure and the Dog Mushing excursions and this time we just want to do our own thing. I reserved a car with Avis and figured with gas, it'll be hella-cheaper and more adventurous this way.

So...I'd love some ideas from those who have previously rented a car in Skagway. Where to go? What to see? What to do? Where to eat? :)

See the recent previous thread on this subject at

As suggested on the other thread, download Murray's Guide to the South Klondike Highway to take with you, for anyone taking the drive.

All your questions

(Where to go? What to see? What to do? Where to eat?)

are answered there.

You can find it if you google Murray's Guide

Best $5 we ever spent for Skagway.

There is a link to a free page from his guide there to preview.

There is also a free guide available at

http://www.bellsalaska.com/myalaska/klondike-highway.html

but Murray's Guide is really much better and includes nice photos.

(No, I do not get a commission from Murray.

He doesn't even know me :D )

After I posted this topic, I went to others' posts and discovered the Green Jeep tour option...it's a little pricier (about a bill more than Avis), but with an actual CD/narrated tour guide and a more appropriate vehicle (I think I reserved a mid-size car with Avis...LOL!!), this might be a more sound option. Couple that with your Murray's Guide and we may just rock Skagway!

Thanks again!

We are on the Miracle leaving 7/15. We're doing Green Jeep tour with another couple. $207 for a 5 passenger jeep for the day. $103 per couple plus gas...oh yeah! They say there's only 2 roads in Skagway and the road out of town actually kinda parallels the train route so it's hard to get lost. Plus we can stop whenever and wherever we want for sightseeing. Can't wait! Call or email Green Jeep. They have been very nice to deal with.

For clarification, There is only the Klondike Highway and the Dyea Road. The Klondike Highway is recommended to go to Emerald Lake and return, 75 miles one way. This is a regular well maintained 2 land highway. The above poster has not been there, and is repeating a "common" statement in support of driving- the "parallel" mention. Yes it does parallel with the White Pass RR, BUT it is NOT the same viewing. There are only a couple miles of common view. The scenery is superior via the White Pass.

Renting the jeeps is not necessary and in the past they did not allow any off road.
