esimon Posted March 24, 2014 #1 Share Posted March 24, 2014 we end our trip in Fairbanks and the airlines have messed with our timing big time. We have to check out and spend the day in Fairbanks before an evening flight. Would love to know how to spend our time since we have no where to go. Hotel will hold our bags but we will be 'homeless' for the day.

If being homeless for a day is an issue you can always pay for an extra night and leave whenever you want, but the best suggestion is to rent a car and get out and about. rjeffler Posted March 24, 2014 #3 Share Posted March 24, 2014 It really depends on what day of the week. The Large Animal Research Facility gets great reviews! They are closed when we are there (Sunday/Monday) so we are visiting the Running Reindeer Ranch! Google it! Also, North Pole is close if you want to say you've been there! Ginger Pepper Posted March 24, 2014 #4 Share Posted March 24, 2014 We will be in Fairbanks for two days before starting our Cruise Tour in August. We plan to drive one day to Chena Hot Springs and Ice Museum (60 miles from Fairbanks), and also visit the Cultural Center in central Fairbanks. If you need a good place to eat, the Pump House (historical building) on the river in Fairbanks has been recommended to us. Happy travels!
AKStafford Posted March 24, 2014 #5 Share Posted March 24, 2014 The Fairbank's visitor's site might give you some ideas: http://www.explorefairbanks.com/ Renting a car for the day would give you the most options.
esimon Posted March 24, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted March 24, 2014 thanks for all the input -- do you need a car or is public trans available?
AKStafford Posted March 24, 2014 #7 Share Posted March 24, 2014 There's MAC's: http://www.co.fairbanks.ak.us/transportation/ But it's usefulness is limited. I personally would rent the car.

Hotel will hold our bags but we will be 'homeless' for the day. I'm curious as to what hotel you will be using. Several major hotels are quite close to the airport. And what sorts of activites do you enjoy? For example, do you enjoy museums? Would you like to see the Trans-Alaska Pipeline? I would also recommend renting a car. If you need a good place to eat, the Pump House (historical building) on the river in Fairbanks has been recommended to us. Happy travels! We live on Chena Ridge so the Pump House is a local tavern/gathering spot. But while food is subjective, the past several years the meals at Chena's Bar and Grill, particularly the seafood, have been better than the Pump House.
