The Sunshine is the worst rated ship in Carnival's fleet

I assure you the sewer smell is still very prevalent. We spent time on deck 3 lobby, directly outside the atrium doors on the starboard side of the ship. At this area I noticed a swift wind blowing sewer gas from above where the life boats are stationed.

Once as I was getting off the elevators directly forward of the atrium, there was a Carnival employee spraying into the air a deodorizer to dampen the smell. Our eyes met and I could tell she felt like she had been caught. So they are very aware.

It is there but maybe just on certain circumstances. We noticed it quite often on our cruise.

We're booked on her for May and looking forward to it. We actually sailed on her when she was the Destiny. I always say that a cruise is what you make of it, if you are a natural complainer and expect everything to be perfect then sure you're going to write a bad review. I don't expect perfection and still always enjoy myself and what the heck I'm going back and do it again/

I went on the Sunshine in January and I absolutely loved her. We did smell a very faint sewage smell at times but it didn't damper my cruise. We were on deck 8 aft and we did not have any issues. It was our best cruise so far.:)

Reviews are the subjective opinion of those that write them. Most of the reviews have been positive, but the negative ones won't stop me from cruising a particular ship or line. Cruise critic is a great place for information on cruises, but the majority of cruisers aren't even aware of the forum or write reviews, so those negative reviews on any cruise line is a very small percent of opinions.

Just like election polls, you always here about this or that person is up in the polls meanwhile no one I know has ever been polled.

YES, A cruise is what you make of it, YES the issues will not ruin your cruise, and YES a bad cruise is better than working. YES, people are more likely to report the negative.

Week after week reviews come in complaining about the same issues on the Sunshine. These seem to be the main complaints:

  • Sewage smell in rooms
  • Sewage smell on decks/Liquid Lounge
  • Shower flooding
  • Toilet issues
  • Drips in hallways

There are complaints about service/food as well, but that is subjective.

All Carnival ships have at least a 4 star average, but the 61% "Loved It" rating puts the Sunshine 10 whole percentage points below the next lowest ship, the Splendor at 71%. So it has more sub-4 star reviews than any other. It is lower rated than the "Destiny" itself.

Do you think Carnival will do anything to address these issues?

I spent a week on Sunshine over New Years and didn't see or experience any of the things you have listed. I've been on many of Carnival's ships and I have to say that Sunshine was among my favorites.

I sailed the Sunshine 2-16-14. I smelled the sewage smell several times in the main lobby. I had to leave my room for several hours because the air conditioner leaked all over our bed on deck 6. That same morning our toilets would not flush and it affected the whole side of our floor. The next day down the hall tehy had to repair a leak that was all over the floor!

But I still had a great crusie. I would rather sail the dream or freedom. My next cruise is on the Breeze next year.

I was on the 2-16-2014 cruise I had a great time and would sail the sunshine again.

What problems are not fixed? There were none of these problems on our Sunshine cruise.

I was on the inaugural out of New Orleans in November and I did notice a very strong sewage smell just outside the Liquid Lounge on deck 4 a couple of different times. Only other issue I noticed on the entire ship was the bad layout and size of the comedy club. With that said, I wish the ship was staying in New Orleans instead of the the Dream.

but I'd like to see more positive reviews to balance out the negative.

Assuming you're not one of the dingleberries that like to "stick" around, you'll see that besides what they post, most review here are positive or at least neutral.

It has a few issues that some don't like but what ship doesn't have a few issues?

The Sunshine has a lot to offer and we found it to be fantastic.

Well, she is a "new" 18 year old ship, there's bound to be issues cropping up.

You can re-paint and re-upholster an 18 year old car and call it new, that doesn't necessarily make it so. And so it goes with aging cruise ships as well.

RCI calls all their refurbished ships new. Just look on their website. So must be an industry thing. As extensive upgrade as sunshine recieved it might as well be new. They don't hide its destiny history. As you can see from the numerous pic reviews. There is a nice display of all things destiny related on the ship.

What fixable problems haven't been fixed?

When did this ship 1st sail? Last spring/summer? I read about the problems since then and thought surely it would be fixed by November, WRONG. I'm talking about the leaks and sewerage. That sewerage is disgusting. For an ENTIRE week they had 2 buckets with something that looked like blue hospital bed pads catching sewerage leaks near the sushi & steakhouse area. The picture area smelled VERY VERY strong of sewer as well. One day it rained very hard and the balcony rooms below the lido deck were leaking.....etc etc etc

I just think carnival has had plenty enough time to fix the problems. When I read complaints about buckets or sewer I get angry at carnival.

I had a great trip and would sail on the sunshine again.....I'm just disappointed in carnival.

People on this forum somehow forget that its designed for opinions and everybody has their own opinion with a right to express it.

I didn't let the negative things stop me from enjoying the ship. People just need to sail on that ship and form their own opinion. I'm happy for those who didn't experience this on their cruise.

We traveled on the Sunshine in January. I went intending to give the ship every chance. I know that reviews are subjective. This was our 1st time cruising with our daughter's family. We had a great time because of who we were with and the fact that we were all on vacation together.

As I mentioned, we traveled in early January. The ship was not packed. There were not a lot of families on the ship due to kids being in school. (Our daughter homeschools her kids and had lesson time built into their travels).

There were definitely issues with the ships layout. We had some issues with service on the ship that concerned me. This was probably one of our bigger issues.

Its funny because one of the complaints I had heard was about the lack of seating along the promenade deck between the casino and the Alchemy bar. Frankly I thought that was the best decision they had made. Not having seating there and having more clustered by the Alchemy bar and the new Ocean Plaza area made it much easier to walk the promenade in the evening.

When all the photographers are set up in front of all that seating on their other ships and people are waiting in line to take their pictures it really messes up the flow of people on that deck. On the Sunshine with those seats missing the photographers were not stuck in the way. The lines of waiting people weren't in the way. It truly became a promenade that you could easily maneuver between various parts of the ship.

There was definitely a much more crowded feel out on the lido deck. I was sorely disappointed in the Serenity area. It is no longer serene. It is beautiful, but the crowding and noise from the lido can't be gotten away from. We never had a problem finding seating when eating in the lido buffet. I think most people forget that they can go sit back around the Havana bar and the other venues at the back of the ship. We ate breakfast back there most mornings and carried our trays there when eating there mid day. It was always sparsely populated and very peaceful.

Ultimately when asked would I cruise on that ship again, all I can say is I wouldn't rule it out. However, I will not search it out and I definitely will not go on it during peak cruising season.

I guess I should have typed up my own review of the cruise to touch on the areas that we loved and the areas where we had problems.

Many thanks for the warning re. Splendor.

I've been toying with the idea of Splendor out of NYC later this year

but this low rating you mention, plus Splendor's dreadful "decor"..

..have made me reconsider. Thanks again. ;)

Just read the reviews here...

http://www.cruisecritic.com/memberreviews/getreviews.cfm?action=ship&ShipID=658

Many, many people complaining anout the horrible sewer smells, these are reviews from 2014, not last year. Also comments about leaky pipes, ect. It was a rushed refurb, and quite frankly from the reviews, a shotty one at that. I sailed her twice when she was Destiny, once when new, and two years ago, and the ship had really gone down hill! I won't be back on Sunshine until I hear all the issues are resolved. Yes, a cruise it what you make it, but most have a reasonable expectation of working facilities and a clean environment, i.e., no sewer smells, and leaks in halls and rooms. 'Nuff said!

Well good for you! If you read the reviews on the boards they are overwhelming positive! Keep in mind the reviews you are referring to that anybody can create an username and create a bad review. It us evident some have no life here except to bash carnival. So bless your heart for making such an educated decision as not to sail on sunshine and roll tide

Creating usernames and accounts is just as easy for employees of lines they want to promote, so just don't assume they can only be made for negative reviews. This includes people that were posting and blatntly proifiting from redirection here to their personal website.

We were all included on all the iside info from the sabatage of the Sunshine, forward, so the credibility stuck that what peopkle were reporting was in fact true. In fact, there was a very long span between the sabatage being reported here, till the time Carnival admitted it even happened.

I won't deny when she came out of dry dock there were issues. However if you look at all the pic reviews on the boards and reviews from people on other websites they are overwhelming positive since she has been in service for a while.

The Sunshine is my favorite ship! I sailed in January and loved it so much I have 2 more cruises booked on that ship. There was a slight sewage smell on the promenade only between the coffee shop and the casino bar which is probably only 20 feet. Other than that I did not smell sewage anywhere else on the ship. The service on the ship was exceptional. I loved all of our waiters, room steward, bartenders, etc. I have always had good service on Carnival but the service was above and beyond on the Sunshine. I hope that some of the staff are still on the ship on my next cruise. In talking to them I know some of their contracts are ending and they are moving to other ships. I can't wait to sail on the Sunshine again. Too bad I have to wait another 219 days!;)
