Dayenu Posted April 8, 2014 #1 Share Posted April 8, 2014 Just wonder to compare to what I take. How many per day do you take? On quiet days I take 2, if a day-long bus tour, or waves I take 3-4.
O2Cool Posted April 8, 2014 #2 Share Posted April 8, 2014 I eat candied ginger whenever I feel the slightest bit queasy. Thank goodness this seems to happen only in very rough seas. There are a lot of people who describe their ginger capsule dosage on any thread concerning sea sickness or sea bands. My son takes 2 capsules a day starting a couple of days before the cruise and then two a day after that. This also worked for me while outrunning a storm. I sat on a stool in the casino and played a slot machine. In addition to being fun, keeping my eyes on something that was moving in the same sway as I was, stopped my nausea almost instantly. :D
Mary Ellen Posted April 8, 2014 #3 Share Posted April 8, 2014 I take 2 with breakfast and 2 with dinner. Ginger isn't enough for me as I'm one who gets seasick very easily. My MD has me taking ginger in combination with the patch. Independently, neither was completely effective in moderate to rough water, but the combination has worked wonders in over 45-ft seas. browneyedwoman Posted April 13, 2014 #4 Share Posted April 13, 2014 I've taken Gin Gin hard candies with me on our cruises and they worked great. I have gotten very seasick on smaller boats and I've always worried that it's going happen on the cruises but I've been lucky so far. When I have felt motion on the ships, I just have some of the ginger candy and it really helped. Are you going on a cruise soon?
Karysa Posted April 13, 2014 #5 Share Posted April 13, 2014 One ginger capsule or a green apple usually does the trick for my DD's who get seasick but on occasion they have had to take a Gravol and go to sleep for a few hours.
Dayenu Posted April 13, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted April 13, 2014 I just wanted to compare to how many others are taking. WebMD recommends 250 mg 4 times a day.
flamomo Posted April 13, 2014 #7 Share Posted April 13, 2014 Hmmm .... my physician recommends one 500 mg capsule 3 times a day as needed. Works for me!
donovan52 Posted April 14, 2014 #8 Share Posted April 14, 2014 I usually find one capsule works fine for me - I take it if I get an upset stomach (usually from eating too much or something disagreeing with me), not for seasickness. One thing I find that works well for me, if I am feeling particularly badly, is to break open the capsule and let the powder dissolve in a little bit of water. I find it makes me feel better more quickly - but if you don't like the taste of ginger it is not a good idea!
RoxnDox Posted April 14, 2014 #9 Share Posted April 14, 2014 Question - do ginger capsules leave you with any sort of aftertaste or anything? My wife (the one who will be seasick...) gets horrible headaches from scop. patches, we're not sure if Bonine will be effective, and hates the taste of ginger... We are also going to give the sea bands a shot and planning on green apples as well. This is going to be our first cruise, so not sure what will or won't work for her. Dayenu Posted April 14, 2014 Author #10 Share Posted April 14, 2014 The capsule itself is tasteless, on the water or whatever drink you use to wash it down gives (or not) the aftertaste. It dissolves in the stomach, so you won't feel that you swallowed ginger. Jim, does your wife gets sick on buses? The same that works there should work on a cruise. I hope your cabin is in the lower half of the ship, in the middle third of it, and has at least a small window.

Yes, she's been known to get sick on buses, (& trains, floating restaurants, autos, planes...). The usual cure is driving or sleeping, we're hoping the sea bands work for her. We did make sure to get a mid-ship balcony mini suite on the Golden Princess (Dolphin deck, so pretty low). Jim
