Sorry to Blow Off Steam or Whine about the Wine

You are right, kazu, Princess does seem to be a good fit for us, but what will we do when we run out of places to go? We have now been to 41 countries and are hoping to hit 100 before we die. I guess that means we will have to try other ships and even some river cruises. :p

Either that or you'll have to accept Hal's policy. It just seems to me there wasn't much that you liked about Hal. That how I feel about celebrity. Why even consider a line that doesn't gel with what you enjoy?

From what friends have told me, river cruises are lovely ....and the wine is included. Sounds like a win/win for you.

If you're hoping to hit 100, you may have to travel in some other way besides by boat. Some countries just don't lend themselves to sightseeing by water.

Good point- They can just fill up their bota bags with wine and hike, no corkage fees to worry about

Why should the non drinkers pay more for a cabin than they do now so drinkers can get cheaper drinks?

My bar tab on my upcoming cruise will be $300 probably. On NCL, same amount of drinks it would probably be $400.

But why should HAL raise all cabin prices so they can lower drink prices or bring on unlimited amounts? You are punishing all and rewarding only a subset of those harmed.

The market forces have obviously dictated the pricing practices. Live with it.

Why should vegetarians pay more for a cabin so that meat eaters can have steak?

why should people who bring their own water have to pay as much as people who drink water on the ship?

should you get a discount for bringing your own pillow, for pulling up your own sheets, for not going into certain venues? I doubt I'll go in the casino or the big shows every night - should I pay less than someone who does? Would it be better to have to buy a ticket for the public potty rather than go all the way back to your room? Or maybe have group shower arrangements and get a room without a shower? I could get even more ridiculous but I won't. My only question about the steak is - if you love the animals so much, why do you eat their food?!!!! ;)

Here is how it was for us two months ago on the Amsterdam. As a 4-star I went to the free wine tasting where they were showcasing the Navigator Package wines. I didn't like the two reds and kind of held off buying a package. This was a 56 day cruise (half of the Grand World) and I eventually asked our wine steward what was available in the Navigator package. He showed me an extensive list and said I could pick any one or more up to the price of $49. per bottle. I chose a Columbia Crest Grand Estate Merlot and ordered the 12 bottle package. Price with gratuity came to under $200. Eventually they ran out of that and I switched to a very good Argentinian Malbec. Personally, for 4-star Mariners I think this is a very good deal. I checked later when I got home and noticed that the Merlot sells for about $13. a bottle. With included tip I paid $18 or $19. Why would I want to bring my own aboard and pay corkage under these conditions?

Exactly my point. The cruise lines come up with the offerings they think will bring in the most profit. The question of why should I have to pay for things I don't use is silly. As consumers, we can choose whether or not the package has value for us, and make the appropriate purchasing decision.
