Turn your balcony light off!

I wonder what this means, exactly. How many notes on a cabin door have you received? When you say you "don't respond well"... does that mean you get belligerent? Do you become passive-agressive and do more of whatever it is that's being addressed? Do you retaliate? Do you ignore the note?

I really don't get it...

Oh yes... They don't like a note so of course they must go crazy and be a jerk.

This place is really weird sometimes.

My guess is they roll their eyes and ignore it like me... Lol

I never had a note on a door. The note would most definitely be ignored, however, if my cabin neighbor knocked on my door, my light would be off in a minute, and I'd invite her for a glass of wine or a cup of coffee.

Passive aggressive is not my style. I'm very direct.

Let's remember there's an on and off switch for a reason.

Edited to clarify: Tiffany, I re-read your post, I had originally wrote, "tiffany, seriously?" But realized you weren't calling me a jerk, and deleted it. :)

I'd much prefer a note.

People can come across as more confrontational than intended face to face too.

And of course this thread may decrease the number of people who need to say anything in any medium, so I appreciate it being posted.

On the Breakaway our neighbors left their light on all night. The switches were confusing. I just asked my steward to show them. They truly did not know. Problem solved.

Now if I could just get my land neighbors to cooperate. Our neighborhood can be seen from Mars. Totally cannot see stars, comets, etc. And it really makes it bad trying to enjoy fireworks on July 4...

I leve my front porch light on as well as the two double flood lights in my back yard, all night, every night. A well lit neighborhood is a lot less attractive to criminals. This is FAR more important to me than anyone being able to see a star.

They can smoke, sing, sunbathe nude, dance, play poker, take pictures, do laundry, drink and whatever they want unless it becomes a nuisance such as balcony lights on 24/7.

On our last cruise, we upgraded to a balcony which is a big treat for me. I look forward to this rare opportunity to sleep with my door open to enjoy the sound of the ocean and feel and smell the sea breeze while falling asleep. I wake up a little later and close it. Our next door neighbors kept the balcony light on 24/7 of our 7 day cruise and so we had to pull the black out curtains on our door to darken the room so forget about getting a sea breeze and sound. I don't mind smelling the cigarette smoke rolling in occasionally from both sides, that's their privilege but please be aware enough to turn out the lights once in a while!

It is THEIR balcony and THEIR light. As long it is what they choose to do they can do it. I prefer less light as well, but what others do with their light is not my decision.

If someone left a sticky note on my door telling me what they think I should do, I'd put it in my "special" filing cabinet.

I'm not a fan of balcony lights but I don't get my panties in a bunch over little things on vacation.

And yet a sticky note would accomplish the "bunch"? It's such a little thing...

No bunch...I would just toss it. Not write a note back or anything.

If someone does leave me a sticky - I hope they label it as an infraction and assign me demerits. THAT would be a note I'd keep and I'd laugh so much. :)

Why would you think there was anything all aggressive about a note?

Clearly balcony crime is a problem on cruise ships.

So you would have no problem if the guy next to you went out to His balcony at 3 in the morning to play His bagpipes?

It certainly hasn't gone the way I expected. I can see how new posters on here get put off when a simple post turns into a 10 page argument.

For what it's worth, my thoughts about next doors light being on lasted a few minutes, and at no point did I even consider mentioning it to them because it wasn't a huge deal. The only reason I even remember it is because the thought seemed to bring about a ship wide power cut which then made me realise exactly what we are all missing.

My son and wife came out to the balcony during the power cut to see if I knew what was going on, and I told my son to look at the sky. He looked and just said "wow".

As an aside, just my neighbours turning their light off wouldn't have made the difference that the whole ship blacking out did. There was lots of other light.

It's a shame that they can't arrange a short lights out ship wide at a specified time, but I'm sure there are lots of other implications which would make that impossible.

I was in the casino that night when the power went down and wish I had seen the stars. I remember being in the wilds of Borneo a few years ago and standing with Tony in total awe at what we were seeing. It was amazing. So few people actually take pleasure in the simple things in life anymore.

As I was on the same cruise as you I will raise my balcony issue. On one side I had the couple who came home at 1AM and made so much noise they woke us up every night and on the other I had the lady who liked to sing. She would be out on her balcony, Ipod plumbed in to her ears belting out the tunes. Each to their own, I'll just go up on deck to not have to listen. Until the night that she did this at 2:15AM. I endured for about 20 minutes but then went out and stuck my head round the partition. She looked so startled I felt sorry for her. I just put my finger to my lips and she apologised profusely and ran inside where I heard her partner tell he to STFU as he wanted to sleep.

Hi Jean, it was good to meet you on the ship.

I actually thought we were next to each other. Towards the end of the cruise we were heading towards our room, and Pam thought she saw you come out of the next room. We had also passed you by the lifts at another time. We mentioned at the time that it was a coincidence if we had been in next to each other all week without knowing it. We were in 10120.

The balcony with the light on was the other side, by the way.

I don't think we fit either of your descriptions though, unless my wife has a secret midnight singing thing going that I wasn't aware of. Because of our son, we are always in our room at about 10pm (that's why I spend the evenings on the balcony). I'd love the opportunity to make noise in our room at 1am, but it's whispering and sneaking for us if we're still awake at that time.

Although I'm not saying you are (and hoping not) but I think there may be some people that just get enjoyment out of irritating their neighbors. I just don't get that!

I have only been guilty of that once, I had the neighbor from hell that screamed at us, our other neighbor, her husband etc for a week, after 2 days of running her mouth nonstop I took great pleasure in pissing her off and did it every chance I got. You wanna yell at me, well now you have a reason

When we started cruising we had no clue about balcony lights! If the balconies near the bridge should not use the lights they shouldn't be there in the first place. We love going out at night to "gaze". On our Reflection cruise I dropped something on the balcony and went to turn on the light to look around. There wasn't even a light to turn on! I like to see ships in the distance at night but if they all turned off their balcony lights we couldn't see them! I did roll my eyes at some of the statements made on this thread, really???

Our first cruise we didn't even know there was a light out there! It was kind of scary being out there at night so close to the ocean on our way to San Juan. Got used to it by day 3 I think :)

There have been things that neighbors did that annoyed the h-e-double-hockeysticks out of me. There was the "giggler" on a recent cruise that drove us nuts. She would giggle for a long time every time her boyfriend said something, amusing or not, at all times night or day. And they spent a lot of tome on their balcony.

But I'm not into confrontations. The only time we ever confronted a neighbor was a cigar smoker who was ignoring the rules and made our balcony unusable at times. But I don't think I'd risk annoying a neighbor over their balcony light. You would risk them making your vacation miserable with repercussions.

I would venture that most people don't spend a lot of time in their cabins, hence a note might be more effective than trying to catch someone "at home" and possibly sleeping, dressing for dinner, enjoying private time, etc. I think it's perfectly acceptable to leave a nice note (e.g. Hi neighbor! I was hoping you might turn off your balcony light when you're you're not using it. We enjoy star gazing off the balcony, and it would be a huge help to not have the extra light. Thank you!)

That's a very nicely written note and I would have no problem obliging. Its a matter of catching more flies with honey than vinegar.

Once had a land based neighbor that loved to call cops and city authorities with these wild stories to get someone over there right away for his silly assed complaints in the neighborhood. ones that could have been addressed right off the bat with a nice note or conversation like yours.

And people wonder why I I bought a house a full 2 wooded lots away from my nearest neighbor. :)

I was quite relieved to see,on a later post, you were on floor 10 as we were on the same cruise and I didn't realise that the balcony had a light!!so it could have been us as the curtains were drawn by the cabin boy so never noticied. We were not watching the stars when the power cut occurred we were looking at the sparks coming out of the ships funnel!!We later found out it was due to ash setting on the engine when it cut out and sparking when it got going again,my sister was more amused at the families going to the muster point with life jackets in hand, with regards to people coming in after 1 am we had that with our 15 yr old son!he never left the club.
