Capri pants in the main dining room?

 Share

Recommended Posts

Is it acceptable for women to wear capri pants with sandals in the main dining room for dinner? I'll be sailing the Breakaway to Bermuda in a few weeks and trying to pack as light as I can.

Yes, I wore them most nights, with a nice top. And Birkenstocks for that matter!

Yes, I've done that. Not sure if MEN can get away with it, but for women it's just fine. Actually, anything dressier than a bathing suit and cover-up, or a torn T-shirt and ragged jeans, will probably be OK. It's Freestyle!

I wear capri pants all the time in the evenings - I wear very dressy top when we go to the formal dinner (in main dining room, Le Bistro or Cagney's).

As for sandals, google Grandco Sandals. They are so comfy and dressy!

That's great. I think I'm going to love freestyle cruising!

So do we! DH loves the fact that he is able to wear either shorts or long pants (chino) with collared shirt in the evenings.

No jackets.

Keep in mind - there are a few restaurants that don't allow shorts in the evening. The larger aft MDR does not, and neither does LeBistro. I'm not sure if there are more on the newer Breakaway and Getaway. But that leaves the midship MDR and most specialties, along with the buffet, grill & Blue Lagoon.

Does the same rules go for children? Could a twelve year old boy wear a pair of khaki shorts and a nice shirt to dinner inthe main dining rooms on the nights that are not the formal night?

Hi - I am platinum on Carnival but am taking my first NCL cruise next month.

How many formal nights are there and what is the dress code - can my husband wear khakis and a nice shirt or does he need a tie and jacket? We are sailing on the Breakaway for 7 nights.

Thanks for your help!!

He just squeaks in: Kids 12 and under are welcome to wear nice shorts in all our restaurants.

We found that on Norwegian Sun last year ONE of the main dining rooms permitted men to wear jeans, shorts and/or sandals, but not the other 'main' DR.

We never ate at the specialty restaurants so have no idea what their dress codes might be. It's a little limiting but he absolutely refuses to wear long slacks/jeans at in a warm climate so that limits where we dine. I don't much care either way and don't dress up myself, so we like NCL's Freestyle.

We did find that the buffet food which was pretty good and available nearly around the clock, tended to kill the appetite for DR food. During the day I believe everyone can wear shorts in the dining room --

I would definitely sail NCL again and loved the old Norwegian Sun.....great large aft deck with tons of open air tables -- we spent more time there than on our balcony or anyplace else.

Ncl doesn't have a formal night. The do either a 'dress up or not' or 'night out' both are the same and some out in a suit but not many. No rules re not going in the mdr without a jacket on ncl

See, this is where NCL is so great. We used to schlep the garment bag back and forth on cruises. DH had the suit and I had 1-2 fancy dresses. Nowadays, that's another 35 bucks if you're flying. No thank you! With NCL, I don't take anything I can't fold up and pack in my one suitcase. I have some cute summer dresses, dressier capris, etc, that I like to take but all of those are packable and perfectly acceptable in any eating venue on the ship. I also have a little bit dressier dress (would be appropriate for church) that I take for the night we eat in Le Bistro. I have yet to find anything I have taken not be appropriate in every dining venue on the ship.

As for boys, nice khaki or even plaid shorts (not board shorts) and a collared or button-down shirt, etc, would be completely acceptable. As my boys got older we just switched to khaki pants as opposed to shorts.

On other lines, some people get all bent out of shape over "dress codes", however, on NCL we have found that with few exceptions, most anything clean and neat, is acceptable.

I absolutely agree with the above. My wife and I have only been on two cruises. One was NCL to Alaska and another was CCL to Cabo (her company booked a cruise for their annual meeting and I got to tag along). The NCL freestyle experience was wonderful. The feeling of not being encumbered by dining formalities really played well with us... especially for a destination like Alaska. To me, the formal night on CCL felt artificial, stifling and a bit pretentious. I had a separate garment bag just for clothes that I would wear all of two hours and then quickly change out of them. I didn't see the point.
