drco Posted May 9, 2014 #1 Share Posted May 9, 2014 Hi all, We will be sailing from Vancouver to alaska. What is a good time to go to the pier to check in?. As the ship will not leaving until 5pm, can we go out after checking in and just walk around canada place? Thanks!
Krazy Kruizers Posted May 9, 2014 #2 Share Posted May 9, 2014 Try to get to the pier around 10:30 and check in. Embarkation usually begins around 11:30. Usually the cabins are ready by 11:30 and you can drop off your carry-ons. Yes you can go back off the ship but since you are in Canada, you may have to go through immigration again when you reboard the ship. Remember to be back in time for lifeboat drill which is usually 45 minutes before the ship sails. Check your daily "On Location" program which will be in your cabin. sapete Posted May 9, 2014 #3 Share Posted May 9, 2014 (edited) The fact that you will clear US Customs and Border Protection might limit you ability to "re-enter" Canada again. One possibility could be that if you don't have a lot of carry-on is to drop your bags, do your exploring around Canada Place and then board the ship. Typhoon1 Posted May 9, 2014 #5 Share Posted May 9, 2014 Build in some extra time for your return. The ship waits for no one.

Bodger Posted May 10, 2014 #7 Share Posted May 10, 2014 I have a hard time believing that once you have legally entered Canada, that leaving the ship and returning to it while in Vancouver should be a border control problem. Bodger

Bodger I'm pretty sure that US Customs and Immigration has a station in Canada place and you "enter" the US when you meet them there and step onto the ship. I know that's the way that works in Canadian airports and I'm pretty sure that's the way it works as well for a cruise out of Vancouver. Once you get to the first port, you have already met with US immigration and do not need to do it again. Roy

Roy Respectfully, I do not believe that there is a US Customs and Immigration station in Canada Place where the cruise ships return. Passengers are exiting a ship onto Canadian soil -- why would they go through US Customs and Immigration?

Bodger Believe me....we ran into a close disaster when we boarded a Princess ship in Vancouver headed for Alaska. We embarked and then decided to get off the ship to grab some souvenirs and alcohol back in Vancouver. We were not told that we should take our passports with us for our return to get back on the ship. When we had made our purchases, we returned to board the ship and because we did not have our passports, we ran into trouble. We were going from Canada soil to US territory (being the ship) and needed to have our passports for Immigration again. Fortunately, the problem was eventually alleviated whereby a Princess representative and a ship crew member accessed our safe in stateroom to get our passports out and give them to us so we could then reboard. It was quite stressful and would have been helpful if we had been given the correct information.

You clear US Customs & Border Protection prior to embarking. From both governments perspectives you have left Canada and entered the USA. I thought the comment had referred to going through US Customs and Immigration when RETURNING to Vancouver, not departing from Vancouver.
