Ed Posted June 4, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 4, 2014 We are wanting to see bears and salmon running but weren't sure if late August is going to limit our chances to see them. Which port, Ketchikan, Juneau or Skagway is going to be the best places to see bears and salmon on tours and does any one have names of good tours? Thanks

Ed Posted June 6, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted June 6, 2014 Anyone else able to weigh in on whether late August limits our changes of seeing salmon running and bears fishing? If you took a tour off NCL which one worked the best for you and which port?
Budget Queen Posted June 6, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 6, 2014 Anyone else able to weigh in on whether late August limits our changes of seeing salmon running and bears fishing? If you took a tour off NCL which one worked the best for you and which port? Only other choice would be the fly ins to Hoonah some cruises offer out of Juneau- these are usually liked with a whale watch and meal. IF you are only going to stick with ship tours, be CERTAIN that if you choose Ketchikan- the location is listed that you go to. Neets Bay would be your other option. I have been to both areas. These are for black bears. Hoonah is browns. Independent out of Juneau would be Pack Creek- you would need to verify the season and any permit availability. Browns as well. aarrcc2 Posted June 12, 2014 #5 Share Posted June 12, 2014 We went to Haines on excursion from Skagway and saw bears with cubs fishing in the Chilkat River for salmon the first week of September.
mapleleaves Posted June 12, 2014 #6 Share Posted June 12, 2014 Alaska Fish and Game is a good resource. Go to the link for each site and view info on peak viewing times: http://www.adfg.alaska.gov/index.cfm?adfg=viewing.bearviewingsites Alaska Outdoor Journal is another good site. http://www.alaskaoutdoorjournal.com Lots of info on-line. Google is your friend. If you want specific information about NCL tours, read thru last yrs trip reports in the STICKY above (go to reply #45 where reports are sorted by cruiseline).
