Eileen G Posted June 7, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 7, 2014 We were able to go to the Crab Shack on the Coral Princess last week while cursing in Alaska. From reading some of the reviews it seems that the Crab Shack is different on each ship. On the Coral it is held in the Bayou Café on sea days. We did not plan to go but we had a voucher for a free bottle of wine, which we don't drink, and we traded it in for a $30 OBC for a specialty restaurant. The reviews were so-so but someone we ate with earlier in the week told about it and said it was great. We are really glad we went. I love crab and we don't get it very often. Here is the menu for the Coral. This is the appetizer. You get more than that but I ate some of it before I took the picture. I really enjoyed the Manhattan Clam Chowder. When we got the main course they gave us an apron which we really didn't need. The crab is all cut up for you and easy to get. I didn't eat the corn or potato, not with all that delicious crab. Eileen G Posted June 7, 2014 Author #2 Share Posted June 7, 2014 This is the amount of crab in that bowl. We asked for more crab and they brought another bowl of just crab. For desert we had chocolate pecan pie. We split a piece since I was too full of crab:p. I thought the meal was great and we would do it again on our next Princess cruise. KruzPrincess Posted June 7, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 7, 2014 Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I really liked it on my Star Princess cruise in December. I had the mixed steam pot and, on the Star, they brought one big pot, not separate servings. It's looked a lot more impressive being one big pot. LOL. Rare hllwdcruiser Posted June 7, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 7, 2014 It looks delish! Glad to see they were generous with the extra crab. That first portion looks a little skimpy to me.

itzmered Posted June 8, 2014 #7 Share Posted June 8, 2014 Do you have to sign up for and book this like the regular specialty restaurants?

IECalCruiser Posted June 8, 2014 #9 Share Posted June 8, 2014 (edited) Do you have to sign up for and book this like the regular specialty restaurants?Yes. You can often walk into a Specialty restaurant but I got the impression that the Crab Shack was reservations only, no walk-ins. IECalCruiser Posted June 8, 2014 #10 Share Posted June 8, 2014 No special desserts at the Crab Shack. They come from those being severed at the Horizon Court that night. Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app
Eileen G Posted June 8, 2014 Author #11 Share Posted June 8, 2014 Do you have to sign up for and book this like the regular specialty restaurants? We made reservations the day before with no problem. On the Coral it was held at lunch between 11:30 and 2 on sea days. I don't think many people knew about it because it wasn't crowded.
jg21 Posted June 8, 2014 #12 Share Posted June 8, 2014 Is this an "all you can eat" type deal? I could do a number on crab legs and the shrimp!

beachseeker Posted June 8, 2014 #14 Share Posted June 8, 2014 Was it offered only on the official sea day or are the scenic cruising days an option as well?
Eileen G Posted June 8, 2014 Author #15 Share Posted June 8, 2014 We had it on the Hubbard Glacier day which was really like a sea day.

Whoo Posted June 9, 2014 #17 Share Posted June 9, 2014 That looks so great! We meant to try it on our last cruise, but never got around to it. Darn! Will definitely sign up when we cruise again!:)
shredie Posted June 9, 2014 #18 Share Posted June 9, 2014 Thanks for the pictures. I haven't tried the Crab Shack partly because I hate having to do surgery on crab legs in order to get to the meat. Seeing them sawn in half might convince me to try it.
Mary Ann 2 Posted June 9, 2014 #19 Share Posted June 9, 2014 I wonder if they are cutting the crab now on all the ships? When we did it on our March Hawaii cruise, they were not cut up.

I'm not telling Posted June 9, 2014 #21 Share Posted June 9, 2014 Guess we got unlucky on the Emerald. Starter was cold and batter was very limp. Soup was so-so but flavour of fish was lost , overpowered by the smoked bacon. Main course - went for the mixed steamer, again most of the food was cold and really not very tasty. Dessert was average but what really spoiled the meal for me was the coffee at the end of the meal. Asked for cream or milk and it was presented in a Horizon Court plastic mug!! The fun bit was scoring each course/service on the paper tablecloth - Hope they read it!

You must have gone on an off night or perhaps it was near the end of the night? That would definitely not be an excuse for a sub par meal but was just wondering. Also, the crab legs were not split when we went. That's something I would really appreciate. I definitely needed the apron. :D:eek:

The Wait Staff very lackadaisie, except when the restaurant manager was around. We don't plan on sailing on the Emerald again.
