We are leaving on a Rhine river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel on June 21st on Avalon Visionary. Our question is should we take binoculars for viewing the Rhine Gorge? Any other suggestions to enhance our cruise experience is appreciated as this is our first river cruise.

We are bringing along some small binoculars. They don't take up a lot of space, but might come in handy.

We use them for looking at the birds in the backyard, so we already had them. Not sure I'd go out and buy an expensive pair, but if you can find some inexpensive ones..........your choice.

Anyone else brought them along????

Bushnell's make a small pair of binoculars that fit easily into a pocket/purse. I got mine on Amazon, but most sporting goods stores sells them. They are pretty inexpensive (about $25), so if I lose them it isn't a big deal. I plan to take them on the Rhine Getaway in October.

I take a small pair of binoculars on every trip I take.

Ditto. My husband always packs his binoculars, and on certain trips, I take my own small pair as well (we don't share well:p Because we both want to be looking all the time!)

For scenic trips, I would take the small but powerful binoculars over an extra sweater or pair of pants!

The problem is that any binoculars that cost on $25 will be total junk and absolutely useless for anything.

I have had them about five years now and they have served me well in all my travels. They are by no means the best binoculars out there, but they are good enough to spot birds/animals/scenery and easy to carry.
