Nurse Carol Posted June 15, 2014 #1 Share Posted June 15, 2014 We are leaving on a Rhine river cruise from Amsterdam to Basel on June 21st on Avalon Visionary. Our question is should we take binoculars for viewing the Rhine Gorge? Any other suggestions to enhance our cruise experience is appreciated as this is our first river cruise. CaroleSS Posted June 15, 2014 #2 Share Posted June 15, 2014 We are bringing along some small binoculars. They don't take up a lot of space, but might come in handy. We use them for looking at the birds in the backyard, so we already had them. Not sure I'd go out and buy an expensive pair, but if you can find some inexpensive ones..........your choice. Anyone else brought them along????
Ozjohnno Posted June 16, 2014 #3 Share Posted June 16, 2014 I take a small pair of binoculars on every trip I take. I believe they are invaluable particularly when cruising the rivers of Europe. I wouldn't leave home without them.
uniongal Posted June 16, 2014 #4 Share Posted June 16, 2014 Bushnell's make a small pair of binoculars that fit easily into a pocket/purse. I got mine on Amazon, but most sporting goods stores sells them. They are pretty inexpensive (about $25), so if I lose them it isn't a big deal. I plan to take them on the Rhine Getaway in October. Hoyaheel Posted June 16, 2014 #5 Share Posted June 16, 2014 I take a small pair of binoculars on every trip I take. Ditto. My husband always packs his binoculars, and on certain trips, I take my own small pair as well (we don't share well:p Because we both want to be looking all the time!) For scenic trips, I would take the small but powerful binoculars over an extra sweater or pair of pants!

The problem is that any binoculars that cost on $25 will be total junk and absolutely useless for anything. DON
uniongal Posted June 16, 2014 #7 Share Posted June 16, 2014 I have had them about five years now and they have served me well in all my travels. They are by no means the best binoculars out there, but they are good enough to spot birds/animals/scenery and easy to carry.
Grandma of Lily Posted June 16, 2014 #8 Share Posted June 16, 2014 Definitely take them. This is a very scenic route and they are useful for looking at castles up close, what people are doing in the vineyards and just generally being nosy! Nurse Carol Posted June 16, 2014 Author #9 Share Posted June 16, 2014 Thank you all for your advise. We already own a pair of binoculars as my husband is an avid bird watcher. We will definitely take them.
