Is there really enough time - Mendenhall Glacier

We are in port 1pm - 10pm we are thinking about taking the blue bus out to Mendenhall Glacier and then hike Nugget Falls. Since we get into port at 1 pm and the last bus leaves the glacier at 6 pm is there really enough time to do this? I don't want to take the chance of missing the bus back. Also, since we are going to be doing Glacier Bay is it really a "must do" to go see Mendenhall?

 

Are there any hiking trails near the port? We need to keep costs down so we are trying to do a lot of things on our own. Thanks!

You have MORE than enough time. The hike only takes an hour, add another hour for the transit.

 

And no, this certainly is not a "must do", if you don't wish to see it.

you have time to take the glacier shuttle to the glacier, do the 1 hour hike and get back in time. I would not miss it.

1pm - 6pm is plenty of time !

But if there are 4 of you travelling, consider a rental car. 4 shuttles will cost $80 and even tho a rental may cost a bit more, it will open up more sightseeing opportunities ..... drive around Douglass Island, drive along the coast (shrine of st therese, Eagle Beach, Roads End).

Maybe go to Mendenall at 6pm as crowds are leaving to catch the last shuttle.

There are only 2 downtown rental options. Juneau Car Rental and Avis at the Goldbelt.

2 weeks ago we took the glacier bus out at 2 and caught the 4:30 bus back with plenty of time. We negotiated with the people selling the bus tickets and got round trip tickets for $16 instead of $20
