My husband and I are booked on the inaugural cruise for the Quantum of the Seas on Nov. 23, 2014. We will be coming in from the Los Angeles area and have never been to NYC/NJ. We would like to take a redeye from LA on Nov. 20 and do some sightseeing and Broadway show in NYC prior to our cruise out of Cape Liberty.

Feeling lost and overwhelmed on planning this trip. Haven't booked flights yet; do not know whether to fly into JFK or NJ? Transportation from NYC to port? Any advise would be much appreciated. Thank you.

I'd stay fly into Newark. It is only a few miles from the port.

Hotels are generally less expensive than on the other side of the Hudson.

A hotel for example would be:

SpringHill Suites by Marriott (Newark International Airport).

There are a more close by so do a few google searches.

Very close to airport. They do have shuttles from the airport to the hotel.

Just a few miles from Cape Liberty Cruise Port. (Short cab ride)

The Path Trains are close by and just a short ride to New York City for sightseeing, shows and the like. It would be a good choice as a base for your stay.

JFK is not really close to either NYC or the cruise port.

OMO

ps. cab rides to or from JFK to NYC or from NYC to Cape Liberty depend on traffic which at some times (MOST-LOL) can be both exhausting as well as expensive.

Let's take this step by step. What is your hotel budget? How many people? Dates would be Nov 21-23? Would you consider using Hotwire?

If you decide to stay in Manhattan, then you can fly into either JFK or Newark. Going home you should fly from Newark.

Your hotel budget will determine whether staying in Manhattan will be a possibility. Hotwire prices are actually reasonable for your dates. It will cost you about $100 for a car service to get to Cape Liberty. If you can manage your luggage, public transit and local Bayonne cab is an option for about $25 for two people from Herald Square (33rd & 6th near Macy's).

Flat Fare from John F. Kennedy (JFK) Airport:

For trips between (to and from) Manhattan and JFK International Airport, the flat fare is $52.00 plus any tolls using Rate Code 2 on the meter. A NY State Tax Surcharge of $.50 will be added to each trip.

If passengers request multiple stops, the flat rate of $52.00 will be collected at the first stop in either Manhattan or JFK International Airport, and the meter will be activated at Rate Code 1 (standard city rate) for the remainder of the trip. The metered fare should be collected at the last stop, from the last passenger.

All trips between JFK International Airport and New York City destinations other than Manhattan will use that standard metered rate.

Going on Quantum from Port Liberty. Will be staying in Times Square & need transportation to port. You mention above that cost for car service would be around $100. Do you know if there is pickup at hotel service to the Port cheaper than $100. Maybe van type service? Also need return transportation to Times Sq.

Thank you so much ...you sure provide great value to this site.:)

$100 is a ballpark figure - some folks have paid less and some more. On top of the base fare you have tolls plus tip of about 20%. I know that sounds expensive, but the reality is that a NYC based car has to pick you up at your hotel, drive through one of the tunnels, drive to Bayonne, and get you into the port. The points of failure for this trip are the tunnel crossing and the potential traffic backup at Cape Liberty with people getting dropped off. These risks are built into the car service quotes. The car may also have to dead head back to NYC (once again risking the tunnel crossing) before it is able to pick up another fare.

Is there no way you can manage your luggage? PATH and the light rail and cab is an easy trip. When I did it on a weekday morning, the PATH train to Hoboken was empty as was the light rail to Bayonne. It was all level access with elevators.

Carol...Thank you for your reply. When you outline all the cost for car service, it makes $100 seem reasonable . We will be 2 weeks away from home and that might require 3 suitcases. Could handle 2 but 3 would be tough on public transportation. Have to give this some thought..just might have to bite the bullet and pay $100 each way. Maybe can rationalize that $200 cheaper than airfare for 2 r/t to Florida for cruise (we live in s. Jersey & get to NY by bus for $60 r/t and requires very little luggage handling). But then again doesn't include the cost of show tickets  and hotel prior to cruise. Won't have to pay parking at the Port...that cost can go toward car service. We'll I'M rambling here......bottom line it's vacation ..don't worry ..be happy. :) Thanks again Carol.
