Smoking Policy on M Class Ships

Absolutely not true, Celebrity has picked up many people who appreciate the policy.

We are giving Celebrity a try partly because of the their smoking policy. We like HAL but nearly suffocate with the constant smoke everywhere. We like the fact smoking is not allowed on balconies or the casino on Celebrity.

I agree. I'm not sure they'd have kept the change if it decreased profits. Other than Carnival's attempt at a smoke free ship many years ago which failed (probably before its time), I think Celebrity was pretty much a leader among the mass cruise lines in making most areas of the ship non-smoking. These days it seems like a lot of cruise lines are instituting similar policies or at least parts of the policy. I doubt it would be catching on if it decreased profits.

We took our first Princess cruise (wanted to try Grand Turk) this year and the smoking in the casino was horrible, even just walking through to get to the theater. They were also having some issues with people respecting the new policy of no smoking on balconies. Change is not easy, but eventually it takes hold. It made me appreciate even more the more restrictive policy on X. Now if they would follow through with no smoking on the Summit before my repo cruise in Oct I could be a really happy cruiser.

  • 1 year later...

Last week on Millennium, smoking area were as follows:

Deck 4 Port side. 3 locations. First at doorway adjacent to theatre. 2nd outside Michael's Club and 3rd by the mid ship staircase doors.

Deck 10 Port side in the.swimming pool area. A large section and always busy with most seats occupied.

Deck 11. Port side adjacent to the small bar on that deck but not at the bar itself.

Oceanview bar at the back was completely no smoking.

We are ... well, I am, very sensitive to smoke but do respect the rights of others to smoke if within the smoking sections. After all, they have paid for their cruise as well.

We now tend to spend more by booking a balcony cabin rather than an inside or oceanview cabin on Celebrity and now on Princess. Too many cruises spoiled by having a smoker on their balcony right up wind from us -- every time we opened our balcony door to go in or out, a vacuum of smoke filled air entered our cabin and our balcony cabin was wasted money for us. I will repeat, this was in the rules at the time so not complaining one bit!! However, the argument that Celebrity lost a lot of business when they implemented their non-smoking policy on their balconies may have lost them some revenue, they certainly made up for it and maybe even in higher amounts in the long run.

With all that being said, we recently sailed in an aft cabin on the Infinity. It was a California crowd as it was SF roundtrip, but I never ever was bothered by any smoke from above on that cruise. I make the distinction of being a California crowd as smoking is quite restricted in this state, so not many smokers on this cruise. However, living in the area has made me acutely aware when there is smoke in the air. I never smelled it once from my aft balcony. Maybe there is hope that it doesn't waft down to the decks below if you really want an aft cabin.

I also sailed on the Solstice on deck 11 just aft of the suites on the hump. I did notice smoke on this balcony from the pool deck above as we were on the port side. I think the smokers opened those windows on the pool deck and it did draw back to the cabins aft of this section. It wasn't horrible but it was noticeable. I mention this because it does make sense that they keep the smoking sections towards the back of the ship to have the least effect on the other passengers.

Does anyone know if cigars and pipes are allowed in any smoking areas on M Class or only in certain ones?

When smoking was discontinued at the aft Oceanview Bar (that was the only place you could smoke cigars) they can now be smoked in any smoking areas on the ships. (Think Summit is the only exception, since reports say there is still smoking allowed at the aft bar area.) This, of course, could have changed, as change is the only constant on Celebrity. :)
