Stirling Castle or Inveraray Castle

Hi Zales

Stirling Castle is a historical medieval military fortification while Inverarary Castle is more a large country house albeit with history. My own personal preference would be Stirling. If you are docking at Greenock you do not state whether you are doing a private or ships tour, if a ships tour both are reasonably accessable if a private tour Stirling would be my choice. I hope you enjoy your visit to our wonderful country.

Very different as has already been mentioned but Stirling is a major historic site in Scotland and the views are spectacular. don't miss taking the guided tour. You won't regret choosing a visit to Stirling Castle. It was one of my favorite sites on a three week tour of Scotland.

Hmmm, I did do a quick research of both, and for some strange reason I found Inveraray to be different from all the other castles like Edinburgh, Cawdor etc, I guess like Sanjam cruisers said it's like a house. I will most likely be doing a private tour from Greenock, and most of them are doing Stirling, hence my question. Thanx for your detailed responses:)

If you're a fan of "Downtown Abbey," then Inveraray. Parts of the 2013 season were filmed there.

Funny, I have heard nothing but rave reviews about Downtown Abbey, but never saw the show:p

Also the midgies will be worse at Inverary than at Stirling.

The drive to Inverary is lovely, we are over that way regularly as DS scuba dives in Loch Long. The town itself is pretty touristy, mind you so are many towns in the central belt, including the one where I live. If you went to Stirling you could combine the castle with the Wallace Monument, even the Kelpies and Falkirk Wheel.

I am on the Crystal Symphony next month, doing 3 ports in Wales (where the most Castles exist), 2 ports in Scotland, & 2 ports in Ireland, leaving from Dover. I will be staying post-cruise in Dublin for a week.

My DD borrowed 3 of the disks from her Library and so I did a marathon until 3 AM watching through Season 8. Does anyone know how many more Downton Abbey sessions there are ???

Here in the US, we're only up to Season 5 starting this January. We are dedicated followers and I thought that Season 5 had just recently aired in Great Britain.

Stirling is the "big" draw. OP is correct, Inverary is more like a large country home. Family actually does live in a portion of it. Lovely shop and tea. If you hail from the Campbell clan then Inverary is a must. Both easy to locate
