Dressing in MDR

Jeans are fine in the MDR just not on formal night. One cruise my husband did not have a jacket and did have a tie and long sleeve shirt and dress pants and they did allow him in on formal night.

The next night they supplied a jacket for him but it depends on the ship and who is the person at the front.

I'm glad I read this! I didn't know jeans were allowed. We have never cruised before and leave in October. My husband has some nice dark denim jeans but I told him no jeans were allowed. This is great to know. We are more jeans people then anything else.

In addition, sailing through the Carribbean, one might prefer lighter clothing than formal wear.

 

It is amazing how nowadays the ships have this thing called Air Conditioning which means no matter how hot or cold the outside temperature is the Ship's interior (such as cabins, foyers, lounges, casino, restuarants, MDR and the theatre) are all keep at a comfortable temperature for wearing a suit/tux on formal night.:rolleyes:

I just don't think our Yankee friends are sophisticated enough to do the main dining room justice on a formal night and will try to justify it anyhow.

It was harsh, it was not my intent and I had no mention of any nationality in my post.

That said, I have lots of US cruise buddies and some like to dress formally and others do not, it is their choice. :D

My points (over several posts) have been that people should dress how they want to dress for formal nights but they shouldn't try and use silly excuses (like weight of luggage or temperature or anything else) for not taking a suit or Tux. It is a choice for people to make and th only excuse that they can use is that they cannot be bothered to take the suit/tux.

Blazer and dress pants work for me. On occasion I have been positively overdressed compared to some on formal nights. Smart but casual was the mode of many male cruisers, and not wearing a jacker was not unusual. Just saying ...

As far as my wife is concerned it's not a weight issue, it's a space issue. The less clothes we pack the more room for all her shopping (which primarily consist of shoes).

If I'm not wearing shorts then I'm wearing jeans. I wouldn't cruise with any line that doesn't allow jeans and Celebrity is fortunately one that does.

 

If I was feeling feisty or argumentative I'd even opine that a decent pair of dark denim jeans would even pass muster on formal nights if they were paired with a blazer, but just pretend I didn't say that :)

But people who wear jeans in the MDR on formal night still get looked at- and not in a good way. Might not be just an issue of getting away with it. Not sure what the jeans obsession is about anyway. They are sort of heavy for the Caribbean and take up a lot of suitcase space. That what we wear up north in the winter.
