Piraeus / Athens third visit help

Docking here for the third time, seen all the sights in Athens so what shall we do see?

You've seen ALL the sites in Athens? Might help if you let us know which ones. Benaki museum? Museum of Cycladic Art? Kerameikos cemetery?

 

In Piraeus there is a lovely small archaeological museum that one can walk to from the port (TI can provide a map and directions). They have some fantastic bronze statues, discovered in Piraeus, that are the equal of anythiing in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

 

Assuming this is just a port stop, a car hire for the day could take you to Eleusis and Corinth -- but you have to enjoy ruins. Or a half day to the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion; the ruins aren't much but the views are nice.

 

I haven't done it, but some recommend taking a ferry from Piraeus to Aegina for the day.

If you're not into ancient Greece, that's a toughie.

 

As Cruisemom's post, the archaeology museum at Piraeus is a short uphill walk from your ship.

Down the other side is a marina & waterfront, but it's hardly earth-shattering.

Big fruit & veg market.

Little road-train.

And that's about it for Piraeus.

 

The canal at Corinth is tempting, but it's a fair distance - expensive by taxi or car rental, & I'm none-too-sure if or how you can take a trip through the canal. I guess it needs a tour, & if you're just two that'd be a ship's tour if offered.

 

There's now an express bus service from port to Athens, costs 4 euros for all-day transport.

I think I'd be inclined to use it to re-visit Athens, visit some of Cruisemom's suggestions, or take a more in-depth look at sights you've visited, or have a lazy day just soaking up the atmosphere & people-watching from behind a cold beer in the Plaka.

Have you been to the National Archaeological Museum?

Have you been to the Temple of Sounion?

Corinth and the canal are interesting, also Delphi.

If you're "ruined/museum'd" out, we went to Aegina. Depending on what time your ship docks, you can take an 8:50am hydrofoil to Aegina, and a 3:00pm back. That will get you back in enough time for a 5 or 6 pm departure on the ship. Aegina is lovely and quiet---where you dock is a fishing village where you can just sit in comfortable seats and watch the day go by. The little alleyways are quite nice as well, as well as a fish market at the end one street in back of the waterfront.....It's also ALOT quieter than Athens....When we were there, the taxis were on strike in Athens, so we didn't get a chance to go around the island.....

Having done several Med cruises we have had our fill of old stuff, we have seen all the stuff the Happy Train drives past in the past and don't really want to do another old ruin.

We fancy the Island trip but don't fancy being stranded if we missed the boat etc.

Might just have to do the same old stuff, where do you get the bus from the port to Athens?

The walk to the METRO is about 20 minutes. You walk along the waterfront for about 15 minutes and come to a main intersection, turn right, it a not far from there.

Only started a few months ago, since my last visit.
