Changes to venice sail in?

I've just been reading in an English newspaper that ships over 90,000 tons will not be allowed in the channel/canal which gives the wonderful views of St Marks etc. I have no idea when this will take effect, but it will obviously impact the Venice sail in on some ships.

Anyone have any more news on this?

Most cruise including Celebrity have made adjustments with their fleet in order to comply with the new rules.

It certainly will be interesting to see how this plays out. That the die-hard activists don't even want cruise ships anywhere in the lagoon is troublesome. If they have their way, the only way to visit Venice by ship would be by a long overland bus tour similar to Rome and Florence.

This restriction has already been effected for Summer 2015. Celebrity has no S-class ships scheduled for Venice -only the smaller M-class ships. Same for Princess - Royal and Regal no longer scheduled for Venice.

What a joke. As slow as the ships sail they aren't making waves that will damage the buildings. The water taxis make more impact on the shore. And when they say they are worried about "costa Concordia" type accident that is total bs.

 

I'll bet if no ships went there for a year they would be begging them to come back.

Good point/question on this picture used by the BBC website. It looks like a "Photoshop" special and/or creation. Is it real and honest? From being on the Celebrity Solstice docked there in the main port area, that view/angle does not seem possible.

The Venice lagoon is a fragile environment. Waves, of any size, constantly erode foundations over time. Ships also pump out hydrocarbon emissions by the tonne over time. The lagoon bottom is churned up.

 

I have sailed out of Venice past St. Marks and would trade that experience for big picture thinking; proactive preservation of the Venice lagoon including shore power for ships so they don't have to "idle" during their port visit. Venice depends on tourism and exists by it. Investments in improved or new port facilities will ensure continued lifeblood from cruise ships. Yes the view is nice from a deck high up passing by but not as good as walking through Venice and really experiencing it.
