Hurricane Expert Posted August 20, 2014 #1 Share Posted August 20, 2014 A tropical wave (96L) is gaining some strength east of the Windwards. Preliminary forecasts have this system moving WNW toward the NW Caribbean several days down the road then posssibly into the Gulf. It is still very early to make track or intensity forecasts for this system. A low pressure area has not formed yet.
AlanFromFL Posted August 20, 2014 #2 Share Posted August 20, 2014 LOL...the Sun-Sentinel is already publishing the 'cone of doom' for what isn't even a named system...but we're not quite ready to panic just yet, or break out the hurricane shutters. Hurricane Expert Posted August 20, 2014 Author #3 Share Posted August 20, 2014 That's just the zone where the tropical wave / depression is likely to travel in. You're right, a lot of people like to post the scary graphics to get their website / news rankings up. The Islands may limit development in the Caribbean. The best chance for development will likely be in the Gulf at least a week down the road.
OCruisers Posted August 21, 2014 #4 Share Posted August 21, 2014 Whatever the development or how strong, seems 96L will cause some less than perfect weather in the Virgin Islands.
Hurricane Expert Posted August 22, 2014 Author #5 Share Posted August 22, 2014 Whatever the development or how strong, seems 96L will cause some less than perfect weather in the Virgin Islands. You are probably right about that. Latest models now have the system over the Bahamas late this weekend into early next week with some development as it starts to pull away into the Atlantic. This is a classic example of how the models can be very poor in the early going.
Hurricane Expert Posted August 22, 2014 Author #6 Share Posted August 22, 2014 96L is bringing lots of heavy showers to the NE Caribbean today and will be heading toward the SE Bahamas / Turks and Caicos this weekend.
TwinkleB13 Posted August 23, 2014 #7 Share Posted August 23, 2014 I'm pretty sure this is right where we are headed when we leave Sunday on Carnival Freedom - St. Maarten, St. Kitts, San Juan and Grand Turk. The forecasts for our port days look pretty crappy =/
HammockDreamer Posted August 23, 2014 #8 Share Posted August 23, 2014 Trying to follow the system as well. We leave Monday afternoon out of Port Canaveral for the Bahamas ---unsure what to think --only our 2nd cruise and I'm feeling very nervous... Hurricane Expert Posted August 23, 2014 Author #9 Share Posted August 23, 2014 96L will likely be upgraded to a tropical depression or storm later today. New models suggest that it may not move out to sea and possibly may move into SE Florida in a few days. 96L is a classic example of why tropical systems sometimes can not be predicted very far in advance. Several days ago the forecast had it moving into the Gulf. The past few days near the SE Bahamas and out to sea. This morning the new trend is SE Florida. Not_Done_Living Posted August 23, 2014 #11 Share Posted August 23, 2014 we depart tomorrow for a Bahamas cruise -- by the looks of it -- the Bahamas will not be a choice destination -- do the cruise lines generally modify the itin to other destinations, or will it become a cruise to nowhere? there is nothing listed on the cruise lines website as of yet. Hurricane Expert Posted August 23, 2014 Author #12 Share Posted August 23, 2014 The models midday Saturday have yet again changed some. 96L is now predicted to still head toward SE Florida over the next 2-3 days, then move north to just east of Florida and NC. The forecasts are all over the place. This is what happens when a low center has not formed yet. Regardless, it appears that wet weather sill be moving up into the Bahamas the next few days.
