BD vs BX

I'm looking at a booking for the Norwegian Breakaway, but have a cabin category question. What's the difference between BD and BX? I understand both are guarantee cabins, (which I am fine with) but why two categories? What's the difference between them?

You will be guaranteed at the very list that category room. A BD room typically is on a higher deck. So if they are the same price, then I would go BD vs. BX - which is typically the lowest balcony category cabin.

I thought BX was obstructed view.

On Breakaway and Getaway their are no obstructed views. All lifeboats are mounted on a deck below all the balcony cabins.

This was posted in this (NCL) forum in 2012.

"As part of today's NCL web cast there was an announcement that when all 2011 sailings become available that there will be new cabin categories. The new categories will have two alpha to designate the cabin type and location.

First Number - Cabin Type

I = Inside

O = Outside

B = Balcony

M = Mini-Suite

S = Suite

Second Number - Cabin Location

The location; with mid-ship and highest deck the best or "A" and working down the alphabet.

So an "SA" would be a suite on the highest deck and mid-ship. Expect an "IZ" would be the lowest deck inside cabin all the way forward."

I don't know if it still applies, but I think it does, at least in part. I have a BA on the Epic which is mid-ship, Deck 11. That may be the highest deck for the BA designation based on the deck plans/info at cruisedecks.com. That site also gives info (accurate??) on each cabin type when you roll over the colored cabin type. You'll need to choose the Breakaway, of course. Do the "drag decks" to easily see where the colors are. I just tried a fake booking and it appears that BD gives you an opportunity to have a forward or aft cabin on decks 8, 9, or 10. BX is forward on deck 8. However, they are both listed as guarantees so the BX could, technically, be on another deck. I booked IX on Epic (deck 8 forward--all the way forward) but have been assigned a deck 9 mid-ship. It seems to be somewhat of a crap shoot!--just getting you ready for the casino.

Just as you'll find conflicting info within Cruise Critic, this forum has shown me that you also find conflicting info within NCL. Not criticizing either. I love NCL (just my style), and Cruise Critic has given me much good (and valid) info.

X is the designation in any category, whether it's interior, (I), oceanview (O), Balcony, (B) or mini-suite (M), which gets offered as GTY first. You'll notice that all ships have at least 2 X cabins in each category except full suites, H or S designations. BX is not necessarily obstructed view but can be an enclosed balcony or "cove balcony". (some like it because of the protection from the elements)

So, X is always GTY before other cabins are classed that way and then the lowest category to get close to full and so on up the line. It's not unusual for the GTY's to be all the way up to BB (depending on the ship) and have little cost difference.

There are a few (maybe 4?) cabins specified as BX on breakaway. They are forward and look larger on the deck plan. Of course if one books BX gty, odds are those 4 are filled and one will probably be assigned a different category of balcony.

Next up on the list is BD. Lots of those, but still if one books BD gty, one may get a BD or any other category of balcony.

So, if it were me, I'd book whichever was the cheaper gty, as I do not think it will make a lot of difference. You could seach the BX cabin numbers on this forum to see if anybody said anything interesting (8110, 8112, 8710, 8712); if adverse comment, then BD; if positive comments, then BX.
