When booking with casinos at sea...

I always end up checking a bag, call me crazy, but I like to change my clothes everyday.

No wonder people drench themselves in perfume.

You're crazy. You also need to learn to pack.

I have travelled on a Round-The-World ticket, from:

Toronto - Dublin - Amsterdam - Capetown - Sydney - Melbourne - Sunshine Coast - Auckland - Seoul - Tokyo - Honolulu - Vancouver - Toronto.

6 weeks, 2 climates, business & leisure, 2 pairs of shoes & a pair of sandals.

1 Briggs & Riley computer bag. 1 Briggs & Riley garment bag carry-on. Fresh clothes throughout.

Stephen

10 grand worth of stuff in your suitcases?

I think I will just bite my tongue on this one

My bag was $4900.....my mom's was $4400. When we itemized everything frankly we were shocked we had that much. As I said it was a two week cruise to Europe. This was not a t-shirt, sundress and flip flops cruise. We had day and evening wear including three nights of formal clothes. I lost running shoes, evening shoes, day shoes and sandals and a good coat. I don't have expensive taste in clothes nor am I shopping at the charity shops. I lost all my souvenirs, which included an Italian dress for my daughter and a dress shirt for my son. For the ladies take a moment and write down what you would have in the way of undergarments, toiletries and cosmetics then determine cost. Right there alone I was significantly above $500 . It really is surprising how quickly it adds up.

Even if you do have insurance to cover the loss of your luggage it is likely it's not enough to cover the value of the case and the contents. My advice to everyone is the next time you go on a cruise or any holiday - make an itemized list of what you put into your suitcase. I will be doing so for all future cruises. Hopefully because I have a list made I will never have to use it.

Or watches, or jewellery, or casino cash, or computer equipment/ipads, or 10 shirts @ $250 + 3 pants @ $300 + various other accoutrements, plus contact lens supply, plus, plus, plus.

Easy to get that much (or 3x that much) into a suitcase.

Hope you don't bite your tongue all the way off, with this one...

Stephen do you or anyone you know keep their casino cash in their check in luggage? Come on that's just absurd.

Also I would never keep jewelry or expensive electronics in my suitcase unless it is carryon, it's called common sense.

That makes more sense, sorry that happened to you. In the future you should also take pictures, it will help you on the insurance claim. (This goes for houses also, it's good to take pictures of your belongings every few years in case of break-ins or fires).

Great idea...I do have pictures of my household contents. For my cruise at the end of the week I should lay things out on the bed, click a picture and then place in suitcase. Then I will have group shots and not necessarily an individual picture of each and every item. That would help speed up the process.

Okay

You CAS folks have the best threads and the best deals

I have GOT to start gambling more

Found a great place an hour from here and meant to hit it up before our last Getaway cruise.

General question-

My casino does do NCL giveaways

It is Maryland Live!! ( their exclamation points, not mine)

I have received poker info, but not sure how well I would do.

For those of you who are slot players- how often do you play to become CAS people, or is this something that I have to work on on board ship? Yes, I got my little green card but I didn't ever move up to another color. Spent too much time not in the casino, I guess..

And if this is a stupid question, please keep that to yourself.

I'm sensitive!!!lol

Just interested in how to become a player, so to speak...

Do you have to pay taxes and upgrades then and there or before sail date?

I picked up a certificate yesterday from a casino and want to book the Dawn. Also if you upgrade do they assign a room and floor or can you ask for a certain floor and area like midship? I've never used one before so I have no idea what's allowed.

We just booked our cruise using a casino certificate; we upgraded it and were able to select our cabin. Also, we only had to pay a deposit given that our cruise is 9 months away.

Approximately 2500 points and you will most likely qualify for a comp inside offer. CAS will not call you, you need to contact them to inquire on status. I usually call within the first week after cruise.

Thanks! I can do that next cruise no problem.

Now I have to hit that

Maryland Live!! And do some damage there as well...

The kids DO go back to school tomorrow

Seriously, thanks for giving a real figure

Have a great evening!

Offers are ALWAYS based on average play. They track how much money you put at risk. Based on that SECRET number, they send you more offers. One of those is sometimes a cruise offer. The casino gets you in to gamble. This ship gets you onboard to gamble.

NOBODY can give you a fixed number on how much to play. I will tell you they value slot players higher than Video Poker players, and WAY higher than regular poker.

If your normal offers are for a free buffet and maybe a room, you are probably not high enough.

Bottom line, all offers are based on what they value you at. That value is not tied to your card (though that is an indicator),but is tied to your average play, or dollars at risk.

The elusive secret number

When we were young and childless I never considered ourselves big gamblers- but we never paid a penny for meals or rooms or even for flights to Vegas( to be fair, we lived in Phoenix, so it wasn't like a trans- Atlantic ).

The good old days!

Just the thrill of " would you like to be our guest in the upper berth of our smallest , noisiest, inside cabin, sharing it with 3 strangers on one of NCLs happy ships?" Would make my day!

Went to Maryland Live! Two days ago. They gave me $25 and a pretty card.

I left 2 hours later with no cruise offer, but with enough profit off their $25 sign-on gift to pay for one person in an H6 for a week, not during high season....

GREAT CASINO!!!!!

At Harrah's casino there is no rhyme or reason who gets the cruise certificates. We have friends where the husband has been a high card(diamond) holder and the wife with a lesser level card. The wife received a cruise certificate, but not the husband. At diamond level we received one every two years, but found out we do just as well calling CAS ourselves, instead of waiting to get certificate. Sometimes the certificates saves a lot of money, sometimes not so significant-depends on date, cabin, and ship---- but we love the drink card we receive from CAS, and the cocktail parties

Safe sailing

My husband has been mid-level Diamond for the past few years and this is the first year he received the certificate. On top of it he got 2 from 2 different locations. Why he got them this year and not the previous years is a mystery lol!

How to get offers:

- Keep a high average daily bet.

A few things I learned from my Caesars host:

- I used to go there more frequently than my partner (I'd stop-in while passing through on business trips), but I'd spend less on the pass-throughs than when we went together. Result: his average daily betting was higher than mine.

- If they know you're on the casino floor, that counts as a 'day'. So if you stay overnight and leave in the morning....don't cash-in that day's $10 promo, because it counts the 2nd day in your average even though you may not have played that day.

Reaching levels doesn't really mean much in terms of marketing.... because they may be reached during promo days, etc.

Most of the marketing analysis is done by way of data mining (I know, I sold the software to Caesars, many years ago), and includes groupings by age, gender, postal code, employment type, travel frequency, all combined with average bet. People who fall into the sweet-spot get offers.

Data mining basically takes all of the data elements they know about people, either through their TR card applications, or through agencies like Experian and looks to find clusters of similarity.

Some of the clusters wouldn't be readily apparent, but can have interesting outcomes.

One of my favorites was a big supermarket which dissected its data to the point of suddenly noticing that when diapers were purchased on Fridays, after 3 p.m. the most correlated purchase was beer. They then assessed that the audience was fathers on their way home from work, and started to coordinate displays to target that audience.
